A rose by any other name....

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's just me, but I do like my football club names to be representative of where they come from, i.e. Barking, Basildon Utd, Romford, Southend Manor, Hullbridge, Stansted, Burnham etc etc. Even Corcord has some geographical significance, i.e. Concord Beach.

Also Bowers (Named after their first ground in Bowers Gifford) added Pitsea to give a bigger clue to their whereabouts.

However, both Beaumont Athletic and London APSA (Could narrow it down a bit lads) do not indicate where they are from. Now we have Mauritius Sports & Pennant FC (Welcome BTW) who's name also offers no clues as to their origins, unless you include Mauritius!!!

I realise these clubs are not unique in football and that it is not really a big deal, but I thought as it's a slow day I'd raise it for debate....

According to the club's history, they started on a site now covered by Pitsea Market (ie.the back of The Railway PH). So why call themselves Bowers United? grin

As you can see, the history on the website contradicts itself.

It says it started in '47, then it says it started in '46...

"The club began life in an old wooden cricket pavilion in 1947 on the site of what is now Pitsea Market. A move to Gun Meadow, Pitsea saw the purchase of a prefabricated building which was used as changing rooms. The building of the new A13 from Canvey to the Five Bells roundabout saw the compulsory purchase of the ground and the club's move to its current home at Crown Avenue, Pitsea. The ground was purchased from Basildon Development Corporation along with a prefabricated building which still serves as the dressing rooms.

After the war years, once stability had come to the nation, many new sporting clubs sprang up. One such club was our own, Bowers United, started in 1946 by Bert Salmon, playing at Gun Meadow"

From the EM website... "Eton Manor were formed in 1901 by rich and influential families of the likes of Barings, Villiers and Lord Chelsea for the benefit of bringing sport to the door and underprivileged youth of the East End of London"

Probably old Etonians!!!
