Yes, the selection policy is kind of unique and can be restricting, it has its pros and cons.I think the new manager might be able to bring a bit of respectability and professionalism to sporting (but his record isn't all that according to clapton fans!!). Hopefully we give a few teams a good game at Mile end this year.

The selection process is not discriminatory, you are not selected to picking just asian players. In fact over half the team are non asians (check out their website). Sporting want players from the local community who play for various teams and pick the best to represent them (like a national team etc) and in particular encourage bengali players from tower hamlets and surrounding areas. Hope this clears up some of the queries, although I am not 100% sure cos im just a supporter.

Tricky one this and I very much on the face of it agree with what you say. If a team called themselves London Anglo Saxons and only allowed white players, there would be an immediate cry of apathied let alone racisim.

However in fairness to teams like Bengal and APSA, they are trying to devlop senior football in the ethnic areas so there has to be a balancing act, but possibly just intially. Once the club is established an their communities have the confidence to compete, then it should become an open market.

Out of interest if a private works team or club that had membership restricted to certain elements of the community quite legally then created a senior football club in which only club members could play, would that be discriminatory?

Selecting on the grounds of Race/Religion is totally different to the restricted selection for Works teams or social clubs.

I'm sure it won't be long before you also find exclusively Turkish teams gaining senior status. There are a several strong Galatasaray supporting outfits around. And what about a Polish team in the future?

Its a very slippery slope the FA are standing on.I can understand their desire to encourage and develop football in deprived and ethnic communities, but they are blinkered in allowing the restricive practices to continue. One of the stipulations in being awarded senior status should be to give up any restictive selection policy.

I've played against many teams at Sunday League level whose teams consisted predominantly of the same race .Tottenham Garage and the sublimely named 'Spaniards' spring to mind, but they never excluded anyone else and always had one or two 'ringers'.
