Edgware Town FC 1939-2007 RIP

Recommended Posts

Kentish Town Football Club, would like to take this opportunity and send our best wishes to all those involved with Edgware FC, and are saddened by the news of their closure, it is bleak news when another NL Team, bites the dust, we would like to congratulate all those involved from the chairman right down to the water carrier, for all their efforts to keep the club alive, and what makes it more hard to understand, is that this has come about after having such a succesful season.

May i add that its never over till its over, and i hope that some one will step in at the last minute to give you a reprieve, you at least deserve to be given some time to resolve your situation, at least the landlord should have given you time and some money to secure your future at another venue.

Good luck for the future.

We at Langford were shocked by this turn of events and are really sorry for everybody at Edgware. It now looks like Langford had the PRIVILEGE (for thats what it was), of hosting Edgware in their last league game, however, we hope against hope that something can be done. I think Gavin will remember that after that last game, I posted here that 'Edgware were a BIG club in more ways than one' and I stand by that

Another blow to non league football, especially on the outskirts of London.First school playing fields and now sports fields are not safe, I guess its true that money talks to local councils, its a shame they don,t re-invest the money into local sports facilites for the community.Good luck to everyone involved at Egdware Town FC what ever the future holds.

BE LUCKY

Thank you Miko, yes it indeed looks like our match at Langford was the last ever league match that the 'Wares' would play.

At least we will always remain unbeaten wink

Phoinex, you are so right in what you say about local councils and green areas. It just seems that they dont care anymore, its all about the money and to hell with history and coummnity. True we do not have a large fan base, but is that reason enough to destory 68 years of history and end a football club?

Sadly we dont live in the same world we used to and England is not the same country it use to be, its sad and it looks like it will only get worse, and I can see many more clubs going the same way.

Gavin, never a truer word spoken, but one day the councils will wake up to this fact, but by then the damage will have been done.

Most countries invest in institutions like yourselves for the greater good of the local community, but alas our country seems to be going in the opposite direction, but one day we will all have to make a stand and let the politicians hear our voices. I hope that we will all be there to see it.

Good Luck for the future.

Gavin and all at Edgware Town. I was so shocked to read this thread. I think everyone has said all that can be said. Dont give up without a fight mate - miracles DO happen.

Its hard to beleive after the success you had last season it has now turned sour for you all.

I hope this isnt the end for your club mate as you seem so dedicated and you desrve better!

Good Luck.

3praise - Did you have to get 'Sugar's permission to make that statement, it wouldn't surprise me.

Sad news, of course. I had been to the White Lion a few times over the years as a neutral (went once last season for the 7-0 win over Holmer Green). It was an interesting venue and it is sad to be losing another old-fashioned football ground.

What a joke when you think billions are going to spent on sporting venues for the 2012 Olympics that will be used by elite athletes for a couple of weeks, yet we are allowing established grass roots venues to vanish.

Non-league football within the M25 has never been in a worse state and I can't see things getting any better. A combination of insane property values and an increasingly transient and diverse population (who are unlikely to support their neighbourhood team) mean the outlook is grim.

Red card for that, Rhodes - 3 week ban! You couldn't resist having a swipe at Aki, even on this thread, could you.

This is what I have posted on my Edgware Town forum

........

Supporters Meeting

I need to know if there is a groundswell of support to save the club and possibly salvage something for this season, and if not then for next season at the very least.

The Internet is a wonderful tool but not everyone is online and I know a certain number of older Edgware supporters fans that I KNOW dont want to see the club die, may not have access to this forum.

We NEED to raise awareness and hold a supporters meeting either at the club or if not in a local pub/bar.

I am willing to do the work, ie getting the meeting announced in the local press and asking the club if we can use their facilities or a local bar/pub.

Tell your friends / family / past and present supporters

IT'S OUR CLUB DONT LET IT DIE!

You would say that though wouldn't you but my point was why couldn't the Chairman of Haringey Borough Football Club, namely 'Sugar', come on here to say that himself rather than his poodle, that's why I asked whether you had received his authority to post that message of condolance.

An absolute tragedy. The WLG will always hold very fond memories for me: The meltdown of Vinnie John, the burning of THE scummers shirt to create non-leagues version of The Ashes, Wealdstone fighting for their existance, Borehamwood 'fans' fighting with everyone, the clubhouse fire, the arrival of The Hotel, the annoying car park barrier, Waders getting a vital away point last season - and now this. I will miss the 'old girl' and of course the CoH - many happy times spent in there.

I hope (obviously somewhere else) a phoenix can rise from the developers avarice and rubble.

Gav, I wish you every success with ya supporters meeting. I can give you some names from our club who may be able to give you some advice if you need it. We did NOT go with the Supporters Trust in the end - we set up a new ltd company and it seems to be going well.

With sheer hard work and determination it can work for you. I wish you all the luck in the world.

Gavin

Sport London e Benfica have been frustrated and very angry on hearing the news regarding your club. Angry because the same could happen to alot of clubs. Frustrated that we helpless to do anything.

Our senior team manager has taken the liberty to start a government petition which I hope everyone will support. We are waiting for its approval. Once it has been approved and made live, I will put up the link and I hope that everyone will back it.

Maybe together we can do something to change this from happening in the future!

The petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to intervene and prevent Councils giving planning pemission to Developers to build on Playing Fields and established sports grounds.

Edgware Town FC has been the latest victim of being evicted from their ground. This has been due to developers buying the land from the freeholder.

Playing fields are a cheaper option for developers. However, if there was government intervention to prevent such land being developed in this way, developers would have to buy and build on thousands of plots land where buildings are empty instead of scavenging our sacred playing fields.

Make developers leave the ever reducing hallowed turf where millions play their favourite sport and live healthy, active lives! Where active sport has proven to reduce crime! Where millions congregate and feel a sense of community! If government does not act on this petition they are underlining the lack of commitiment when it comes to crime, community spirit and the population's well-being.

If the government is listening, let our new PM, Gordon Brown, make his intentions known by using Edgware Town FC as an example and stop the planning permission going ahead. Hopefully this will prevent Edgware Town FC having to leave their ground by the end of the year.

Support this petition! Stop the rot!

Gav, shocked to hear of this news today. Feel for you and for everyone else involved at Edgware.

At Croydon, we've come close a few times over the years to going out of business, but managed to keep hanging in there. So I know the feeling of seeing your club looking as if its about to go under - fortunately I don't know what it feels like to go completely under.

Enjoyed our visits to the WHG - it was a proper football ground.

Good luck with the Supporters meeting - hope to see Edgware Phoenix FC in the near future!

Thats a great gesture by you club and your manager and I very much appriciate it.

PLEASE provide me with the link when it goes up online and I will make sure that all sign it and I will put a link on my Edgware blog and forum

I obtained 2000 signatures when I put my pettiton to save the White Lion Ground Edgware online two years ago (when we first knew of the danger) shame it did not have a positive effect
