Edgware Town FC 1939-2007 RIP

Recommended Posts

This morning I have been made aware that Edgware Town Football Club will no longer be able to carry on and with immeditate affect have withdrawn from the league.

I am complety devestated and dumstuck and I feel quite frankly sick. The club had just enjoyed its best season ever in the 68 year history and were ready to take their place at the next level of the non league pyrmid.

I dont know what to say right now, other then the last ever match at the White Lion Ground will be played on Saturday 21st July, and EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE should come to this game.

This is a statement I received from club secretary Paul Gregory

"OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM EDGWARE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

It is with regret that I must inform you that we find our present position as a football club untenable.

With the recent purchase of the ground by Barratt Homes and the grant of planning permission by Harrow Council our main sponsor and benefactor has decided to withdraw their support with immediate effect, putting our lease of the White Lion ground in jeopardy.

We must vacate the ground by the end of the year (December 2007) and with no alternative ground or ground sharing agreement available we will be unable to compete in the league and Cup competitions this season.

This is devastating news after the success’s of last season and all the work that has been done at the club to obtain an E grading for the ground. It will be a traumatic blow to the players, supporters and officials of the club who were looking forward to the new season."

Gavin, I am so sorry to hear this. I knew that you had problems, having spoken to Ken recently, but didn't expect this. For all our rivalry recently, I have admired what Del and Steve have achieved - it is a tragedy for you all.

Thank you Horace, I quite frankly feel sick to my stomach, and am still trying to take in the news, having heard only a hour ago frown

Any groundshare would need funding and to be frank Edgawre just dont have the funding. Without a clubshouse the club would just not be able to continue. Unles some very rich benfactor is to come to the club then I dont see what else we can do.

Gav this is gutting news. There are many clubs tottering on the brink and I am sad to see yet another one go to the wall.

Gav, suggest to your committee that they speak with their counterparts at the likes of Enfield Town, Cambridge City & AFC Wimbledon. They will be able to put you in touch with the Supporters Direct Trust and if there are enough people like you around with a passion for the club, you may be able to rescue something out of the embers and keep the club going one way or another.

All the best!

Gavin,

On the supporters direct topic - feel free to contact me, I'll happily put you in touch with our contact at supporters direct.

A real shame to hear this news, sincerely hope that something can be rescued out of the embers for the 2008/09 season even if its in the Middlesex County League.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, I am still stunned. Sadly Edgware dont have a supporter base the size of say an AFC Wimbledon or even Enfield to re start as a newly formed club frown

I thought this was a wind up when I saw the heading. Absolutely gutted for you fellah. Been down that road myself, when we went out of business in 1978.

Fingers crossed something happens to help you continue in one way shape or form soonest.

Commiserations from all at Romford.. frown
