City says farewell to Syd Wells (Taken from website)

Sunday, 24 June 2007

St Albans City is saddened to learn of the death of our former Fixture Secretary Syd Wells (pictured here during a trip to Alzey in Germany in 1987) at the age of 79. A fine footballer in his younger days, Syd had been in poor health for a number of years, something that restricted his visits to Clarence Park in recent times. Syd was employed by the Royal Mail for most of his working career and was the Saints Hon. Fixture Secretary from 1980-94 at which time club chairman Bernard Tominey made him an Hon. Life Vice President.

The funeral will take place at Garston Crematorium at 12.40pm on Wednesday 4th July 2007; all friends of Syd’s are invited to attend and are also welcomed back at the Conservative Club in Hatfield Road, St Albans, afterwards. We send our condolences and our thoughts to Syd’s wife Helen and their daughter Allison at this difficult and painful time.

I got to know Syd in the 70's when we both served on the Supporters Club Committee. Very committed chap who also knew a lot about non-league footie, especially the Kent League. I'm very saddened by the news but glad that I knew him. It's people like Syd and Bill Nicholson who helped the Club through all the hard times. R.I.P.

I would would just like to offer my condolences to Syd's family at this sad time,

I got to know him quite well during my time at the club, he would always make a point of stopping and getting to know the players.

A real genuine bloke and a real clubman who loved the Saints

RIP Syd
