Ebbsfleet ladies.?

Now that charlton are pulling the plug on their ladies team, this would be a good time for our sponsor to take on board a ladies team, instant national status.

I am afraid that this seems unlikely to occur, although it seems like a reasonable idea. I can't help but think that CAFC have acted hastily and that economies could have been made elsewhere instead. Given that Charlton ladies team were probably the second best women's team in the country, it is a very big kick in the teeth for the future development of the women's game in general. As they also played their home games at Stonebridge Road, I assume that there may be some financial implications for our club too due to loss of some revenue.

We do of course already have a Ladies side who have been sponsored in part by Friend of the Earth.

As a Charlton season ticket holder I am disgusted by the club decision to axe the women's team due to financial reconstruction, which I can undertand has to occur following relegation last season. The Charlton women's team have been the 2nd best team over the last few years and the only real challenge to Arsenal. I feel the club's rash (it seems that way) decision is a nail in the coffin of women's football, which having seen a few games my self, is just as good as the men's. I know Ebbsfleet have a team so them taking on the mantle is not an option. I feel most sad for the players.

It's obviously really bad news for women's football as a whole, not just the Charlton ladies, as it shows that it just isn't taken seriously enough, or given a high enough priority, by those in the position to support the game.

 

Did the women's team generate any of their own income? It'd be interesting to know how much money they recieved through sponsorships (if they had seperate deals from the men) and gate reciepts- After this announcement though, it looks like not enough to run a side : (

As a protest, why not send back your season ticket, and with the money that you get back buy one for Ebbsfleet United.

Remember, they werent originally Charlton ladies either - it was only a few years back that Charlton created an issue in the ladies game by "nicking" the successful Croydon Ladies Team, and calling them Charlton Ladies - that only makes it worse for Charlton in my book.

Charlton and 30 goal a season players do not cross paths very often.

Well Dave, you are full of good ideas. If I still lived in Gravesend I would be at every Fleet home game and have a season ticket. Alas I now live nearer to Charlton, and whislt I disagree with their decision to scrap the woman's team, I will still get behind the boys next season as we try and get back to the Primiership. No sign of my season ticket yet anyway, so cannae sent it back!!!!!!!!

Charlton Ladies might yet be saved anyway - according to the news last night they are in discussions with a potential sponsor.

Yes, the Charlton web site states they could be saved by a sponsor being found, surely the club could have bottomed this out before deciding to close the Ladies team down. Let's hope that a happy conclusion is reached.
