Does anyone think that ...

Recommended Posts

The trails which have been held this week for our reserve side look like producing some very promising youngsters.

Word is clearly spreading that joining Billericay could lead on to League Football.

I know contracted players belong to the club they are signed to , but I can't understand why so many clubs, particularly this year, have blocked moves when their players IMO could, and should, have moved on.

We did turn down offers for Nathan and Chris from conference clubs, but that was done for the benefit of the player not the club. Thats not to say we will reject every offer from conferece clubs, Conference might be the right and logical step for some players.

The conference offers didnt really affect Chris, but Nathan was with us for a lot longer, we always made him aware if a club made a firm offer and advised him accordingly.

The choice is then left with the player.

Does anyone think that we should NOT have sold Nathan and Chris when we did?

Does anyone think that we shouldn't tell a player that a Higher League club has made an offer?

It won't change anything, but I'm interested in what people think as clearly there are clubs/people who disagree with what we do.

I think selling Chris was right for the club and for Chris,

I can't comment on Nathan as i was not around then.

Re Higher league club interest, IMO Always let the players be aware of the situation

I think that is why we are such a good and friendly club. drinkies

No, we should've sold Nathan and Chris. It would've been unfair to both of them to have held onto them and may have affected their performance for the club...(well, that is speculation...).

As for telling a player that there is a higher league club is interested in them...I don't have an opinion either way. I suppose it would only be fair to inform them. It is their career that is being discussed.

I would say that to those people that disagree with what we do as a club, that jealousy is a form of flattery...I've been impressed that Matt Jones and Steve Kent are as commited to success with the club as well as the personal well being and success of the individual players. The supporters are as well. As a supporter, I think there is something exciting seeing a player you once supported at our level get mentioned in dispatches at a higher level.

As you have stated that, one of the reasons why players are considering us as career move is beacuse of the way the club has conducted over Nathan Elder and Chris Whelpdale. In recent history, they are at present the best advert for the club and if they develop to play higher than their current level, well...Do we need to do the math here?

No, in my opinion, the club has acted for the best for both the future of the players as well as the club. That tightrope walk of "doing the right thing" for all concerned has been a success...

I have no doubt that selling players to league clubs or even the Connie National is a great advert for the club. Quality young players with ambition want to play for clubs where they will be developed and watched by scouts. Our reputation must have grown enormously in the past season with Nathan & Chris moving on and I applaud the decisions to let them move to more senior clubs. Keep up the good work!

I think the move was right for Nathan, but I do not feel it was a good move for Chris to go to Posh, as I don't see a real opportunity developing there and feel he would have benefitted from a longer stay in the Ryman to give him time to develop from a team player into something a little bit special which was the way he was going, and I don't the best has been done either for Chris or BTFC but we must just hope things work out right for him.

Cant agree with that , Whelpdale had to take the chance whe offered , tbf Ricky do seem to strike a good balance between whats right for both club and player tip.gif

Well you support Chelmsford who don't have much opportunity for their players to develop as they have been up as far as they can and are on the way back down, so the combination of your assets does not fill me with any confidence in your opinion on this matter, my friend.

Whom I support is irrelevant here , if Chris had stayed he may have picked up a bad injury ala G.Lay , he may not have developed any farther , Ricky could have had a mediocre 07/08 season , he had to take his chance when offered , why be bitter about it ?
he was quality for you last season , keep your memories & wish the boy well.

The question was, has Billericay Town FC done the right thing in letting Nathan Elder and Chris Whelpdale go, could the club have done something different?

Despite supporting Chelmsford, Dill has made an opinion without any reference to his supported club. And it was a fair opinion, without any reference to Chelmsford or other clubs.

Myself, I flirted with the idea that CW should've stayed perhaps another season and the move may have been too soon for him but the club management do know the players well and from what I have seen and had said to me, both the club's and the players requirements are taken into consideration. One has to look at the growth and the development of the team as well as the players and as I have said, the difficult balance of what is right for the club and player has been struck in both cases.

Both situations have been a great advert for the club as far as new talent wanting to play for us because of our coaching and development of players and in getting our profile out there with clubs higher up the league...what more can be done, except not to rest on our laurals and keep it up?

I think the management and coaching staff are doing a great job in making this club a bench mark for football excellance and long may it continue.

Very good ALL round posting Gazz. But i have just taken the above quote.

The future of any football club (money aside) is (imo) purely based on youth. So, with the club gaining reputation for an excellent attitude (staff etc) I believe boys will really want to be associated with the club. Word is the biggest media and parents who read or hear things tend to act.

Difficult for anyone outside the loop to judge, but providing there were no obvious better offers on the horizon (better for Club AND Player) then why not? Only thing with Nathan is that it wouldn't have appeared to impact on Brighton too much if it had been deffered to the close season, and may have made a big difference to us if we'd kept him 'til May. But I guess that's just not how it works in the real world.

I'd have thought they were bound to find out, or at least hear a rumour, so best to be open & honest.
