Saints New Signing: Gary Burrell

Recommended Posts

St Albans City Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of 22 year-old Gary Burrell. The London born left sided midfielder, pictured left, scored 13 goals for Heybridge Swifts last season having been signed from Wealdstone last summer. Started as a YTS player at QPR with Scott Cousins and Ben Walshe. We wish Gary a happy and successful stay at Clarence Park.

'Mad dog' is one cool name-thingy, Boot Cleaner but it would only work if the player was one. Well not actually one , but, say, you couldn't really give that name to Matt 'Matty ' Hann, for example. Dean Hooper, maybe.

I miss the Official releases by the club when they used to quote "...Matt 'Matty' Hann....". I wonder if that was a Webbo thing?

Mr Burrell appears to have been a left back for Wealdstone:

'02/08/84 - Gary signed in January 2003 and his appearances at left back have impressed as he maintains his place in the side.'

Also took the pens for Heybridge, hence the 13 goals. He can take them for us too if Davis goes.

You weren't at the Supporters Club AGM, Laz.

You will remember the story in the St Albans Observer folowing the appointment. It said that Ri(t)chie had been an agent since his injury in January and that '...he had pnoned Gibbo "on another matter" three or four weeks previously...". Mysterious, huh?

At the AGM, someone from the floor asked him which player he had been enquiring about. He replied that he phoned "on another matter". Enigmatic, eh? It was one of those moments. A picture formed in my mind that he had phoned Gibbo to talk about Nerwcastle's chances of winning the League next season, and the Chairman was so impressed with t'lads perception that he invited him to apply for the vacant manager's job.

Similarly, perhaps Gary "Buzza" Burrell was driving past Bisham Abbey, one of the triallists had mis-kicked the ball over the fence, Being a helpful chap, Buzza stopped and punted it back with his left foot, with a degree of accuracy and Ri(t)chie said "Oi!! Do you play wide on the left side of midfield, by any chance, mate? I'm the new Gaffer at The Mighty Saints and I'm looking for a keeper, a left-winger and a holding midfielder".

"I'm yer man".

I was simply protecting the innocent, Hatboy, and I didn't think that the story was spoilt by your anonymity.

Perhaps we should run a caption competition type thingy..

What was the "other matter" that Ri(t)chie Hanlon rang to discuss with Gibbo following which he was was invited to apply for the vacant manager's post at The Mighty Saints?

I watched Burrell several times at Heybridge, he is quite skilful and can produce a fine bit of pace, but hangs on to the ball too long trying to get it onto his left foot, and he does not like to tackle and frequently decides to miss out when he has been tackled too hard. But an honest enough trier.
