Unfortunately I've learnt the hard way how important money is. In which case I can't really blame him for getting what he can, while he can, though I hope he's a little sensible about the extra cash he's earning. (Don't relate my words to the highly paid players in the top leagues. They're overpaid, spoilt prima donners and I hope a salery cap comes into force).

So Tom 'Tom' Davis is 'playing up' and, clearly wants away from Clarence Park. We wont let him go unless we receive a 'good' offer because he's no Paul Hakim, Paul Bastock or Chris Watters.

I've had an idea! Let's rubbish him on the web-site, say that only The Dog and Duck 'B' team have come in for t'lad, and then he'll want to stay. No problemo.

A good point, Hatboy. But.

I don't picture for a moment that Tom 'Tom' Davis is sitting on his butt painting the garden fence waiting for the phone to ring when the chap who used to drive the red tractor says "Good news, mate, Morecambe have put in an offer for you at three and sixpence, your wages will be thirty quid a week and training is four nights a weeks on the coast in whatevercountyMorecambeisin. How does that sound?

The reality is that he doesn't want to play for the Mighty Saints in the Conference South but the club want five or ten thousand pounds or twenty-eight million or whatever is their view of the going rate [i hope they're not basing it on their detailled knowledge of the going rate in Ryman One.] He will be out there punting himself around the market.

So let's say for a moment, hypothetically, that Stevenage are interested. They phone the chap who used to drive the red tractor. "'Ow much?". "Well the Dog and Duck will give us a crate of Budweiser, but Gibbo wants £28,000,000". "Bye".

Why not announce that a special trial game is to be held behind closed doors next week when a combined Manchester United/Real Madrid side will take on Tom - on his own - at Clarence Park, and seriously interested parties will be invited to make a bid thereafter.

In truth, if 'we' don't get whatever Gibbo thinks t'lad is worth, he is on a contract for the whole of next season. We could always pay him to put the cones out for the warm-up. I suppose.

Another masterpiece.

Ritchie Hanlon has been quoted as saying "He won't be going to anyone in our league, though, unless someone offers ridiculous money for him." he could move to a conference club if an offer came in for him but if what Richie said at the Supporters club AGM is true his wage demands are too high for any one to be interested in the conference.

I could give you a million - well allright, a couple of dozen or more - direct quotes from the local press, the matchday programme and the Official web-site which have turned out to be not quite, totally and completely, 100%, accurate, Hatboy.

The sole point that I was making was that the announcement that "only one approach has been made from a lower League club" was not exactly a masterstroke of publicity on the part of the chaps what run the web-site. And according to my sources, it's not accurate, either.

And before you say it, in my view, Tom Davis' interview with the Herts Advertiser wasn't a masterpiece, either. Hardly likely to earn the accolade "The club extends its thanks to Tom for the service what he has provided the club during his time with us and we wish him every success in his future career."

I see it as a case of well you signed a contract with us on very good money when we got promoted and now we've dropped back down you want to renege on it and stay in the conference because you feel that you are better than the conference south (Blue Square Southern), so the club are putting him down by pointing out that no one seems to want to come in for him paying the sort of wages he believes he deserves.

Precisely.

You, me and the club may have that view, but what is the objective of Webbo stating it in that fashion in a Statement on the Official web-site? Is it designed to bring a speedy resolution to the problem?

Have Lewes got a bit of spare cash floating around? They'd do better to use it on bringing their ground up to Conference standard.

Hatboy - I'm sure your'e right again.

When there's no news, there are two choices: Say nothing or print a load of rubbish that will do more harm than good.

It's not rocket science, is it?

[And as for the "Bill Chippington and Ian Ridley didn't actually resign. There were no newspaper interviews. No back-stabbing or lack of support. Nor did Colin Wicks. Total harmony. It's just been a dream. Like Bobby Ewing coming out of the shower." Phew. That's a relief. I thought that there might be a teensy-weensy little bit of local difficulty that was well on the way to being resolved during the pre-season period.]

Never mind about Tom Davis, perhaps that lap-dog Webbo would do well to arrange one of his never-to-be-forgotten "meeting on a face to face basis" with David Tavener and see if he'll reconsider his decision to retire from doing the News bit thingy.
