Cole hat-trick overpowers Irish

A HAT-TRICK from Mitchell Cole gave England an emphatic victory over the Irish at Inverness.

The Stevenage Borough frontman opened the English account on 19 minutes with a back post effort from a Glenn Southam cross and added two more late on to seal a 5-0 win.

Ireland's best effort came in the 36th minute when Vinny Flaherty laid the ball off to Shane Fitzgerald who in turn passed out wide for Ray Lally but his flighted effort was just inches away from finding the mark.

Paul Carden's fierce volley was saved by Irish and Shamrock Rovers' keeper Karl Colman and Southam saw his effort go just inches over the bar.

Six minutes after the break Southam doubled the lead when he returned Colman's punched clearance from 40 yards. And with 20 minutes left England killed off the game, Cole turning provider for Matthew Tubbs who scored on his debut with a header.

The fourth goal arrived in the 78th minute when Cole intercepted a square pass from Gareth Whelan and he sidefooted home, completing his hat-trick by beating the keeper to a left-wing cross.
