The new Kentish Town?

Recommended Posts

Was just looking at another's 'probable' list of how clubs will line up in the Spartan league next season and noticed Sporting London E Benfica in division one. Looking at their website it would seem they will groundshare with Hanwell Town next season (making them eligible for Spartan League). Is there a new club of 'bedouins' on the block? Anyone know anything about them?

Message from Rhodes - he cant post from work - said he'll be around later

Reds76 - I'm at a loss as to why you have compared 'the mighty' Sporting London E Benfica to Kentish Town as there is no comparison, the two Club's are like chalk and cheese. Besides I will be surprised if they are accepted into the SSML next season, as HTFCew has helpfully pointed out it is by no means cut and dried and this one is likely to run and run.

HTFCew - That's a bit below the belt, as I said Sporting London E Benfica were playing on Hackney Marshes on Sunday mornings just over a year ago sucking sliced oranges on the touchline at half time, they are trying to run before they can walk and will come unstuck if they're not careful.

They were formed over 25 years ago, so are not a flash in the pan club. As far as I can make out (as there is no sign of any history on the Kentish Town website, you only joined the SSML in 2003 - where were KT before then and when were they formed?

HTFCew - That's because I plan to post our full history on here shortly, I thought it was on the Website however if you have 'War and Peace' to hand, sorry one of our programmes, it is in there. We were formed in 1994 following a painstaking feasability study by Club founder Frank Zanre, over a number of years, who identified the fact that Kentish Town needed a Community football Club for local youngsters to let off steam. The rest is history.

Quote:
Sport London e Benfica, unsurprisingly, are a Portuguese team. They play their home games at Hanwell Town FC and are currently lying second in the Middlesex County League. They had 30 or 40 spectators at last Wednesday’s clash with table-topping Neasden Foundation and I may have been the only one who wasn’t Portuguese. Both teams scored in stoppage time at the end of the first half and it finished 1-1. I was back at Hanwell on Monday of this week, one of a smaller gathering who saw Benfica pick up three more points at the expense of mid-table Willesden. Early in the game their No.11 went down heavily in the box after the combined challenge of the keeper and two defenders. It looked a certain penalty but the ref actually awarded a free-kick to Willesden. The Benfica player had received blows to the head and chest and appeared to collapse a minute or so after play had finally resumed. He was stretchered away to an ambulance, apparently with breathing difficulties. The Willesden keeper was in good form and kept the score down to 2-0.

A couple of quick points on the link you kindly attached. Firstly what if Sporting London E Benfica don't win their league, would they still be eligible for the SSML or CCL. Secondly the article says they had 30 or 40 spectators at the top of the table clash with 'the mighty' Neasden Foundation recently, wow that's pretty impressive. Lastly Potters Bar Town was at the game with Willesden last week so he may wish to comment on the controversial incidents described.

I agree with Horace, " Pot, Kettle 'style'" - How the hell did KTFC qualify for the SSML. Having checked thru the annals of the F.A.. I see that their illustrious career got off the ground in 2003 after developing from a midweek Youth League in Cambden. You must have more front than Southend to critisise the facilities of established SSML clubs having played on the hallowed turf of Barnet Playing Fields(sorry King George)and spent the best part of the last year scouring the A-Z for somewhere to pitch your tent.

P.S. Hope you remembered to feed the camels.

Yes, it should have been a penalty. Not sure why the referee gave it the other way but I'm sure the assessor will have "had a word" with him afterwards!

You said controversial incidents (in the plural). What other aspects of that report did you find controversial?

I don't know what to make of this rant and am somewhat taken aback wondering what we've done to deserve it. When have I criticised the facilities of established SSML Club's where it is unwarranted and is it our fault that there are no facilities in Camden for us to play hence us being forced to ply our trade outside the Borough. Furthermore the three groundshares we have had since joining the SSML in 2003 have all gone pear shaped through no fault of our own, 99.9% of other Club's would have thrown in the towel by now and folded in frustration but not us.

Surely Frank Zanres feasability study should have actually included where you would actually play your football?

Well you've heard of santas little helper, this is from Rhodes little helper (must be worth a tour of the new football facilities)

Here it is then folks, our Club History that you all appear to be waiting for with bated breath, enjoy:

Kentish Town Football Club

A Brief History

The club was founded in 1994 by two parents concerned with the lack of opportunity to play competitive football in the local area for young players.

In 1995 the club played its first competitive match in the Camden & Islington Youth Midweek League, of that squad of eleven players three are still involved with the senior squad today and the two parents who originally set up the club are now directors.

By 1998 the club had added two more teams and entered the Enfield & District Sunday Youth League.

In 1999 the club was joined by teams from the disbanded Ferdinand FC bringing the total amount of teams playing in the Camden & Islington Midweek League to eight and three teams in the Enfield & District Youth League.

In season 2000/01, in the Enfield & District Youth League, the U12’s won the Championship, Presidents Cup and fair play Trophy and came runners up in the mini-cup final, the U16’s won two finals and finished runners up in their division.

In 2003 in the Camden & Islington Midweek League the U16’s capped a wonderful season by winning the league title and the league cup and the U13’s won the league cup and finished runners up in the league. The club has always had a strong youth set up and moved to the Harrow Youth League after the demise of the Enfield League.

In 2003/2004 the club took the step from youth football into senior football joining the Spartan South Midlands League and were placed in Division Two playing their home games at King George IV playing fields in Barnet and finished a respectable 10th position.

In 2004/2005 the club moved to ground share with Haringey Borough at Coles Park and after the AGM of the SSMFL were voted into the first division to strengthen it along with Cranfield United and Amersham Town. The team finished in an impressive ninth position and reached the last eight of the Division 1 Cup.

For season 2005/2006 the club were forced to move again after Haringey Borough disappointingly declined us a further season ground sharing with them and we were invited to share with newly promoted Potters Bar Town Football Club at their Parkfield home. In an un-spectacular season where the Club struggled to find a training venue and young players often found travelling to 'home games', as well as away venues, difficult a respectable 11th position was reached. In addition the Club’s Under 14’s side, competing in the Harrow Youth League, won their league.

For 2006/2007 Kentish Town Football Club are yet again at a new home, Hendon’s historic Claremont Road will be the venue for home fixtures and the Club have high hopes for a successful campaign with a Reserve side competing in the Middlesex County Football League and a flourishing youth development programme in place with a number of age groups once again competing in the Harrow Youth League. The Club continues to develop and with the vision, passion and commitment of the Chairman Gregg Hazelgrove, Committee, Management, Coaches, Players and Supporters will continue to grow into the future.

I presume that Rhodes' boss (the senior filing clerk) has banned him from using the internet at work. No doubt he'll be reading this when he gets home though.

How he has the brass neck to question whether Sport London e Benfica (note the lowe case "e", Rhodes) should be allowed into the SSMFL I really don't know, as his Kentish Town had NO history as an adult team prior to being admitted to the SSMFL themselves.

Paula - Thanks love, it goes without saying that I'll make it worth your while! Horace - Posting on the Forum is hit and miss at work, more miss than hit however my ears are burning all day long so I automatically know from that what threads you are on. Regarding the Club's history at least I am being open and transparent by posting the full version on here although I'm about to add the groundbreaking events of this season which will obviously highlight 'the great one' joining the Club. I just have a gut feeling that Sporting London e Benfica won't be right for the SSML that's all and I have nothing whatsoever against the Club, I think they are trying to run before they can walk partricularly as they are not even assured of winning their league and another season in the Middlesex League may be more beneficial to them.

Kentish Town, wishes Sport London e Benfica, all the very best in their efforts to climb the football pyramid and more clubs should be encouraged to take that brave step. They should be applauded for their efforts and wish them well for the future.
