My views on the new Wembley..

Recommended Posts

Both matches created new attendance records for the Trophy/Vase Finals, but I have to say the atmosphere yesterday at the Vase, was awful, and it did not sound much better on the TV for the Trophy. Mexican waves/jester hats, not excatly your run of the mill non league fan. I went as a neutral, and yes went along partly as it was at the 'new' Wembley, but at least my friends and I shouted for Truro, whilst actual Cornishman around us were silent the whole match, apart from a couple of 'oggie oggie oggie' chants...is that a cornish thing?

Truro were deserved winners, though Totton had thier spells on the attack and the city keeper had to pull off a world class save late in the game.

As for the stadium, whist impressive, it has no character whatsover, and is all too shiny and very RED for my liking. No doubt with 90,000 chanting fans inside it would be LOUD and impressive, but 2/3rds empty on a wet afternoon in May it lacked that extra sparkle.

Also, why cant you buy a Burger from the many food outlets, and you cant buy chips unless its with a meal or a soft drink unless its with a meal, and WHY were there so many police on duty for a match which was never going to cause any problems?, some things just never change.

I went to the Trophy final. The atmosphere wasn't too bad considering only about ten per cent of the crowd was made up of genuine fans of the two teams, the rest were day-trippers (like me!)

It was comfortable and the views are good, but I'm not a fan of modern stadiums (though the old Wembley was awful).

The food prices are ridiculous (£5.50 for a hot dog!) and the only beers available are Carlsberg and Tetley's (£3.50 a pint).

I did notice that where I was sitting (in the top tier) the tannoy was not working. Not a big problem but I'm sure that contravenes some health and safety regulation.

Dont know what you was expecting Gav? To get 27,700 to a game between two step 5 clubs is pretty impressive if you ask me. That makes the ground 2/3rds empty so hard to make a difference!!

I was there cheering on Truro as well and they deserved it, although 3 goal line clearences and a great reaction save in the last minute from the keeper helped!!

Didn't try the beer but £8 for 6 chicken goujons and chips with a weak flat diet coke isn't the best value for money....

NF

I went Saturday to see the Trophy game

Agree it's a rip off but most places where they have a captive audience are the same nowdays

Thought the Stadium was great though, The atmosphere with 53,000 was good, Imagine when it's full for a proper competitive game it will be a very hard place for away teams to come.

Great day out well worth the £25

Oh it WAS worth the price of admittance, and no doubt when full with 90,000 England fans singing for eg, it WILL be great, but I still dont think the stadium is worth the ammount of money spent on it, nor do I think its the best in the world, I am not sure what is but I dont think Wembley is it.

The whole area around the ground is unchanged and its just the stadium itself that is new, where are the bars/restaurants/hotels etc etc that were prmoised, or is that why the conference centre/exhibithan halls have been knocked down to pave way for new buidlings? They still have the same buidlings from the Great Exhibition of Great Britain from hundreds of years ago down Wembley Way!

It was strange there were no programme sellerrs or merchandise stalls as you walked along the outside of the stadium, and to put just 1 cash machine along a bank of unused greyness outside is just a waste.

Bottom line is, I just dont go for these new shiny stadiums that have no character and are all indentikit, I felt I could have been in any new stadium in the world yesterday, it just so happened to be in Wembley frown

The best thing about Wembley has it always has been is the fact its only a 10 minute bus ride to get there and get home!

Gavin, tut tut. Have followed Canvey to two Trophy finals (we won one) I can say that many of us had the jester hats (still have mine) and we sang loads of songs and chanted OGGI OGGI OGGI lol.
As for the final on Saturday - I was there. Got bloody wet (the roof leaked) and it was pouring down the steps next to me lol.
The atmosphere was fantastic (although we were with a load of stevenage fans (with my Canvey scarf).
Yep the beer was expensive (and watered down) but what the hell - its the same at Chelski and Villa Park.
Only unpleasent bit was getting out and going home - took 3 hours on tubes and trains frown

..

Thats because, your'e a woman, and I saw a few woman who should know beter with this frigging jester hats on, and as for singing 'oggie oggie oggie' isnt that a rugby song? Jester hats and mexican waves have NO place in Football as far as I am concerned and NEVER will!

The three of us at Edgware made more noise then 300 Truro/Totton fans, then again, when there are so many neutrals and the fans are all spread around its hard to get an atmopshere going. I remember going to Cardiff to see Millwall v Man U in the Fa Cup final 3 years ago, and the atmosphere was no where near as good as the Den for a big match!

Whilst it would have been great to see Edgware in the final, I am sure I would have begrudged thousands just turing up and sitting there silent whilst munching thier £5 hotdogs!. I went as a neutral but we still 'got behind' one of the teams vocally!

Didn't notice on Saturday, but due to the fact it was p!ssing down on exiting Wembley Stadium station yesterday, that there was no perspex covering the White Horse bridge.

Now of course they make you walk further up before you can access the stadium.

Bumped into quite people associated with local clubs ie Benfleet, Brentwood, Barkingside, D & R, Waltham Abbey and two Aveley fans (yes, they do exsist).

I actually enjoyed the game more yesterday and the standard was pretty good for a step five and step six side.

Will take a good side to stop Truro making a return next season.

Gavin - you must have been sitting dangerously close to where I was. The oggy oggy oggy stuff was a few rows back from me.

I thought the noise generated was probably the best thing - certainly not the Stadium itself. Already it has a fading facade of cheaply put together brashness, with leaking roof and spoiled concrete. The completely potty Republic Of Brent ensures the experience is simply dreadfull from start to finish and at the end we couldn't wait to get back to civilisation. Why The FA thought it necessary to rebuild in this squalid and ghastly place is beyond belief, pandering to the London Boroughs paranoia and planning paucity. Inside the Stadium the ticket office wasn't working in that no credit cards could be used - they couldn't issue child tickets because no-one had thought of making any, boards still proclaimed ticket areas for Stevenage and Kidderminster and litter on the entry walkways still wafted from Saturdays festivities. - Most of the staff couldn't speak English - the signage was useless, with arrows pointing up huge flights of steps only for the same arrow to then send you back down again. The tannoy operator had a penchance for announcing paltry items during attacking play on the field and the over policing-stewarding was reminiscant of an East German domestic game I once attended behind the old Iron Curtain.

The statue of Bobby Moore was just another example of how not to do anything with charm or alacrity and once inside you couldn't even see that rather over-hyped skyline arch, without which the 'fag packet design' of this carbuncle would be damned for ever. The lack of information screens, TV screens, friendliness from staff or charm from the structure itself was hideously visible for all to see. £5.50 for a hot dog, Beer taps that didn't work, huge queues for badly sited wc's (that are already broken in places) screams of an imagination and conviction of pride straight out of a book on famous Romanian landmarks. The clumsy roof structure weighed heavy over our uncovered heads and for those in the front 20 rows, wet heads.

A loathsome place that is already a crumbling edifice to the monstrous carelesness of the FA's inability to create a worthy capital project in parterniship with the worst Political Borough possibly in the World. Robert Mugabe might have been a more uselful partner than Brent Council. On top of that Transport for London chipped their oar in as well with a hefty £4.60 to travel 3 stops on their stinking and dirty underground train. As someone who was fortunate enough to travel to Japan for the World Cup, I wanted to weep for my country at our knotted and tormented planning system, lack of vision, avarice in deliverance of service, a lack of respect for the paying customer at all levels and a horrible knowledge that people actually vote for 'leaders' in Brent Council to continue their reign of horror on this sickly part of the Capital.

I shall return only in extreme circumstances and the whole place including a good 3 mile radius should come with a Local Government Wealth Warning.

Wader...I could not agree more, well said, I think people NEED to know that the new Wembley is NOT the shining beacon of English football that the FA have us all believe.

I agree about the stewards/ and the blue jackted 'responce team' who were just jobsworths with walkie tallkies, if they threw out a few non league fans for banging on the walls, then lord knows what they will do when Chelsea and Man U fans are there on Sat!

Re the roof, I take it the roof does NOT close, otherwise they would have had it closed for the match, knowing full well that the weather was going to be wet all day.

I just dont like shiny new stadiums in general, they lack any sort of character, the general grounds in the SSML may be basic but at least they are picturesque, something that cant be said about the new Wembley.

Like you, I WONT be going back in hurry!
