If the rumours are true York turned down £100,000 for Donaldson at Christmas knowing that he would leave for nothing at the end of the season.

This was posted on the Darlington forum a couple of days ago by a York City fan so it sounds like the rumours WEREN'T true.

"We were never offered a fee for Donaldson, although other clubs did show an interest. No-one made an official approach as they were given short shrift by our board because Donaldson's agent had already agreed the deal with Hibs. As the rules differ north of the border they got him for nothing even though he was still only 22 when he signed the pre-contract agreement. Hibs offered us £50k to take him in January, which was rejected as our board thought he'd be worth more to us until the end of the season. We made £70k from the play-offs so the decision proved to be right......although not as right as it could have been :-(
He certainly didn't give 100% after signing the pre-contract and after scoring 19 goals before January only scored 7 after (2 penalties)"

It seems unlikely Charlie would have been willing to sign a longer-term deal last summer anyway, since he'd want to keep his options open.
