Norris Telling

Recommended Posts

Who is he? you may ask. For those who have been Fleet fans over the years will I'm sure remember Norris Telling (Chairman). I'm given to understand that this guy won a huge amount on the football pools and used a considerable amount of it to fund the Fleet during the time Lionel Ball was manager. This generous gesture saw the likes of Logie and Co arrive at Stonebridge Road.

I may have missed it, but I saw no mention of him in the club history.

It would be nice for someone to win the lottery and follow in Norris Tellings footsteps. applause

Is there anyone out there privy to further info on this gent

Hi Bill. Norris donated/sponsored a primary schools trophy in the 1960's, remember well playing (and losing 2-1) in the 1968 final for Riverview v Shears Green. We had a proper ref and 2 lino's, which was a big thing for 11 year olds used to biased p.e. teachers reffing games.

You are correct, sorry about that. Put it down to my age, that's the only excuse I have. It comes to all of us eventually, but I did! start as a snotty nosed teenager mouthing about the older generation of fans. It's come back to haunt me. alk

I have just been going through some of my old programmes dating back to the early 50s and Norris used to write a page in the programme along side my late father, very interesting reading My dad writes that in 1951 the membership of the supporters association stood at 2,500 !!!.

season tickets were priced at ground 25 shillings

Ground & wing stand £3.00

centre stand £4.00

George Fooks was the Sec.and the old lads used to keep a bottle of whisky in the office for half time. No bar then but great support Ray your dad was a great friend of the Fleet and would always stop and chat about the team he loved.

If i won the lottery, i would buy the club!,and then change the clubs name to, hmmm lets say 'Woodlands Park Rangers' or 'The marsh land round the back of denton that smells a bit funny in summertime United', well, i haven't won the lottery just yet, (hopefully this saturday) so i'll keep you all posted!

I forgot about George Fooks, Ray thanks for reminding me. Thanks for the informative response from the posters on this thread.

It would appear that there are potential fans out there, albeit fickle. This type of fan needs to see a consistant winning formular, as proved by the Fleets history. Hopefully next season may be the one.
