Scrappy, worthy of a draw! St Mags pretty much bossed the first 30 mins but let Levvy back in.. got to learn to clear the ball properly boys, the amount you've conceded by inviting teams on by not clearing your lines is scary!!

Both sides missed a couple of easy chances in the second half before St Mags drew level.

Ref was shocking but it was both ways.

Beer was allowed pitch side! Smoking in front of the stand wasn't allowed but Levvy assistant manager was allowed to smoke cigars in the technical area (which is astro turf!)....

Excuse me butting in... I thought the same thing. However, i've been to a couple of games at Bromley in the last two weeks and alcohol served in plastic was allowed pitch side. A steward (Millwall) told me it is allowed, it's only in the higher leagues it has an outright ban. Not sure what level that starts from. Connie?

I thought it was something to do with ground regulations but maybe it only applies to certain levels, I can understand that no glass should be allowed pitch side.

As for smoking in the dug out/technical area.........that sucks!

We allow drinking and smoking during a game at Romford...but the ESL officials got the hump last Saturday when they came down to present us with the runners-up trophy. Like it really matters at our level?

Re the vid..NF I couldn't make it who was supporting whom and what ground was it at?

It was at the County Ground in Letchworth!

Saints pay the penalty in cup final

ST MARGARETSBURY suffered cup heartache in the cruellest of ways on Wednesday night as they lost the Herts FA Charity Shield 4-3 on penalties.

As the shoot-out moved to sudden death Andy Birnie's missed spot-kick allowed Leverstock Green's Allan Arthur to smash home the winning penalty ending an evening that had started so positively for Saints on a disappointing note.

The result was harsh on Paul Gurney's men, particularly Steve Barker and Marc Angelini who also had their penalties saved, as St Margaretsbury dominated for long periods and looked most likely to snatch victory.

Gurney told the Mercury: "It was very disappointing but I'm really pleased with how the boys played. We're a young side and this will have been a great learning experience for them.

"In the second half and in extra-time we dominated the game but were just lacking the final ball. But I felt we'd done enough to win the game.

"We played a team that were fifth in the table and in open play I felt we were the better side. This performance strengthens my belief that we can challenge higher up the table next season."

Wednesday's final could not have started better for Saints with Steve Barker heading them in front inside three minutes from Kaine Lovett's free-kick.

Leverstock struggled early on but they began to get a foothold in the game and just after the half hour mark turned the match on its head in the space of just three minutes.

After losing possession in their own half Saints' defence were caught by surprise, allowing James Armstrong to race in on goal and lob the ball over Kris Smithers for the equaliser.

Two minutes later they went in front when more sloppy passing allowed John Pedar to pick up the ball from 20 yards out and drill a shot into the top corner for a 2-1 lead.

Leverstock remained on top for the rest of the half but St Margaretsbury improved after the interval.

Graeme Dearie had a header cleared off the line and with 15 minutes remaining another free-kick saw Lovett play the ball into the penalty area where Maskell headed over the advancing Joel Canning for a vital equaliser.

Saints pushed on for the winner but Smithers was twice called upon to make excellent saves in extra-time.

With neither side able to find the breakthrough the game moved into a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

John Barker and Ben Tobin scored but misses from Steve Barker and Angelini handed the initiative to Leverstock.

Smithers saved from Ryan Upton to give Saints hope and when Armstrong skewed his spot-kick wide it was all square and the shoot-out went to sudden death.

Birnie's miss meant it was advantage Leverstock and this time there was no reprieve for St Margaretsbury.

St Margaretsbury: Smithers, Tobin, J Barker, Lovett, Light (Taylor 65), Birnie, S Barker, Herod, Linger (Angelini 59), Maskell, Dearie (Cunningham 119). Sub not used: Gray

That seems to differ quite substantially to the Leverstock Green version of events:

Tubbsy8 - How are you, have you seen or heard from your good

mate 'Sugar' recently, I expect he has gone into hiding following Haringey's relegation last week.
