NOTHING SHORT OF A DISGRACE

Recommended Posts

I was born and bred in Swanscombe (now living in Northfleet), living in a Dartford Borough we had no connection with Gravesend and Norhtfleet. My old man used to walk across the donkey fields to the ground when he was 15. Then walk me to the ground, across the fields when I was four. The only connection was that it was our local club. As much as I have pride and passion supporting G&N FC it was never the name that attracted either my dad or me it was it's location. Then it was the atmosphere, the social side, the music " here come the Fleet". I loved, as I do today, everything about the club. When my kids grow up (3 & 4 at the mo)their passsion will be for Ebbsfleet United. As will their memories and dreams. I am proud to have shared my life with Gravesend and Northfleet FC. What has gone on before will live with us forever. But now I am proud and excited to be part of something even larger. When the team run out in red and white for the first game as EUFC...I for one will be cheering for my FLEET.

Again reading all the posts on this thread, and sitting around for 24 hours mulling over the decision, I am still disgusted. I will continue to support the club, as it is my club, but Ebbsfleet relates far to much to Dartford for me. If we get into the league as EUFC, then fair enough, but I will still be annoyed, it won't have been GNFC that won the league. Still think we have been sold out by the board for the sake of a few years sponsorship money, sad really. Although I obviously hope to be proved wrong.

Reading the messages too, I think more people are against it than for it, the first home game of the season will see how things have gone. I will be waving my red and white GNFC scarf though, GNFC forever!!

Well I was surprised to see this annoucement but having digested the decision and can see some of the reasons behind it, giving the changes taking place in the area where the club is based. One of the moans on here over the last few years, has been the profile of the club, but I do wonder if this name change will do anything to improve that. I will still come back at see 'The Fleet' when I can, and I hope that this is a step forward and the club moves on from here.

It a new town being built 1 mile south of Gravesend/Northfleet -population expected of around 25,000 within 5 years. 5,000+ jobs expected to be created, and is at the core of the Thames Gateway redevelopment.

It is the largest urban redevelopment in Europe.

It will be served by Ebbsfleet Interational station - linking London Kings Cross, the Stratford Olympic site, Paris and Brussels. It is opening in November - and our new ground is hoped to bee within 1 mile.

Try rearching "Thames Gateway" on google.

I'm sure that will give some evidence why the club wants to tap into this potenial.

try this link

or this one

Jealous now?

The 'quick buck' was more or less how you became AFC Hornchurch as I recall... at least our board operate within their financial limitations and don't expose the entire club to risk of liquidation.

Of course it won't make the slightest of difference, for the forseeable future the name will be linked to the largest construction site in Europe and will be utterly meaningless to anyone outside of the area. Another post above this one, has been made by someone from Hornchurch (hardly miles away) and he hasn't even heard of Ebbsfleet and that with the Channel Tunnel Raillink running almost past his front door.

They could change there name to Real Timbuktoo Thursday and it still wouldn't attract the larger crowds the club are looking for. All this name change has done is alienated the club against many of the supporters that have kept the club in existence since 1946!
