Which is exactly what Liam appears to have done in the case of Joe Howe. So how do you reconcile that then Dave? At least Varney was given more than one game to make his mark.

I'd imagine he'd seen him in training a bit too. OK, that's not the same as a proper match, but a lot of these fringe players come and go and don't really figure in managers' plans when working inside the budget.

And don't forget, David, that the new generation of Fleet fan will say that Ports was playing at 2 or 3 levels below Conference - which would have made him a lesser player than those today.
