Where Will We Finish

Laz

Recommended Posts

Were the new contracts handed out on the assumption that we would finish where we lay at the time (i.e. about 16th)? That was optimistic (one way of looking at it).

'the Board will, no doubt, have at least discussed'

For clarification, who would be discussing with who? Or is that the Board of William Verry?

Any word on one or two HUGE money-spinning friendlies?

Do I look like a policeman, GHA?

How would I know what the Board discussed when they handed out new contracts? Or was your question - your first question either rhetoric or not intended to require an answer, or both?

I don't know the answer to your second quaetion either GHA. I asssume that among the myriad of other things that the Board of a football club 'do' is 'sit down' [more football speak there - not 'meet, not 'discuss', not 'convene' but 'sit down'] and discuss next seasons playing budget. The whys and the wherefores, the pros ad the cons, the upsides and the downsides, the menaing of meaning, and then they come up with a figure. I imagine that, as the company that is the club is a subsidiary of William Verry Ltd, it has an input but I don't know how it works in reality.

No news on any Huge money-spinning friendlies that I have heard. How are your lot fixed? "GHA's Premiership newcomers, the so-and-so University of wherever"?

Are you having a bad day, GHA? It's all very well for you coming on here slinging out the questions, mate. We have to live with this stuff all the time.

Similar to one I know, yes... My first question was fairly rhetorical.

You know what they say about assumption, AFF. You are assuming that the board of SACFC is comprised of more than one person, and that this group of people sit down together every so often and discuss matters relating to the football club? That's in contrast to what's been written in the local papers recently though, isn' it?

Not Premiership just yet, uni-wise. We've got an Origins Bar vs. Mungo's Bar match coming up in a few weeks time, yours truly in goal for Origins until we get to 4-0 up, whereby I'll be taking over upfront. Unfortunately for Mungo's, aside from myself we've also got the University First XI midfield on our side, so it could turn into a cricket score. I'll have a word with some of 'em, see if they fancy putting a team out against the 'Mighty Saints' around August time.

I don't have bad days, just days that don't go according to plan. This one is going according to plan, mind.

The board of The Mighty Saints is Gibbo and Mrs Gibbo and the vice Chairman Alasdair McMillin, and the Happy Snapper. That's four. Bill Chippington resigned a couple of weeks ago, and Ian Ridley resigned at Christmas. There is a chap who does the numbers called Greg Healy and is/was the finance man. His proper job is with William Verry.

The Assocoate Directors are Geoff Brown, Rex Wynn and Colin Wicks but I don't think that they attend board meetings.

I have seen the comments in the press by Bill Chippington and Gibbo, and I read the matchday programme. Avidly.

I assume they meet regularly. There has beeen no reference that I have seen in the press to the frequency of board meetings. I'll make some enquiries.

Moving on, I'm not sure that "Origins Bar" is likely to be a terribly attractive draw to the good people of the City & District of St Albans, GHA notwithstanding that the entire University 1st XI midfield will be on display with your goodself between the sticks for a bit. Do you think that you could change your name to "An Arsenal XI"?

;-)

I've not seen five better taken penalties. The keeper aint bad either.

Well that would be the Manager and Goalkeeper taken care of then !

AFF Am I wrong in thinking that some of the players signed contracts before the end of last season therefore presumably on connie south wages ?

Yes, although I haven't the faintest idea how much anyone is paid, you are wrong, Hatboy. Davis and Marwa signed two year deals at the start of this Conference Nationale season.

Then in December just gone, Elphick and Seeby were given a one year extension to the end of next season, Paul Bastock and Matt 'Matty' Hann a two year extension, and Lee Clarke a three year extension.

Archer and Watters were signed in January and were given contracts until the end of the season after next, ie. two years from now.

This information was published on the official web-site in a press release.

At the time, it was a strange series of events to me. We were in the midst of the Hakim 'affair', Ian Ridley had just resigned from the board, and the Benyon loan period was a couple of weeks away from coming to an end. Presumably, talks with Benyon and Bristol City and assorted agents were taking place.

I have a hypothesis concerning certain of those events but it's all pretty irrelevant now. The contract extensions, without a clause adjusting the salaries downwards in the event of relegation made no sense to me, however, but then, I don't know anything about football.

You know how a few youngsters stand by the tunnel at the end of a game and ask the players for autographs? I wondered if t'lads agents had set up some youngsters to get Gibbo's autograph beside the boardroom on that self carbonisationing paper stuff, and underneath each autograph book was a contract. He did have the flu over Christmas as I remember and that may have contributed, mind.

Big names and on a high wage but many of them don't have big hearts unfortunately.

I went to see Chelmsford v Billericay last night and I was impressed with the latter. Matt Jones has done an excellent job there. I wonder if he could be lured away.

Matty Jones is ours and would be bitterly disappointed to seem him leave as you compare the results he has got compared to that toss pot Justin Edinburgh with the team having lost Pat Sappleton to Crawley at the start of the season, our start striker Nathan Elder in the January transfer window and Danny Hockton who gets hatful of goals at rpl level even managing 20 odd in our relegation season

Also he pops into the crown on Saturday evenings to speak to the fans

Did he play for you lot
