All change! This is Ebbsfleet.

I believe that the inevitable is about to happen.

If it is the case, will Gravesenders get behind such a name, that is being (perhaps forcibly), pushed as a "Dartford" enterprise, by the marketing men of whom have a vested interest in Kent Thameside - west of Northfleet?

A quick example would be Eastern Quarry. It's working title? Ebbsfleet Valley. Rumour has it, that it shall retain such a name once built, although the real Ebbsfleet valley - i.e in Ebbsfleet - has the station sited in it. If 'Gravesend' is not featured in any new name, the perception of remoteness could act counter productive - read Mk Dons etc.

Newton Heath changed their name to Man U many years ago, to represent a fair chunk of Manchester. If the Fleet change to Ebbsfleet, it will be interesting just for the fact that Gravesend will still be the larger and more populous town.

I am a new supporter and will be buying my first ever season ticket for 2007/8. If the Fleet do change names, I will still back them. As for the new sponsor, could it be Land Securities or LCR or even Eurostar? Would make sense, as the name 'Gravesend' seems to be such an ugly word and an absolute no, no to them. Perhaps a name change to Ebbsfleet formed a significant condition to any deal?

Ebbsfleet doesn't even exist as a town yet. Why on earth would we change our name to it? Personally, I would be very p**ssed off with the club if we change our name at any time in the near future. The name's stood for over 50 years, changing it would do nothing to boost attendances, probably more likely to alienate the local population from the club.

The fact people are even mentioning the possiblity of changing our name is laughable tbh.

Yeah if we aren't careful it will end up like the Welsh league with fixtures like Total Network Solutions vs Airbus UK.
I can't understand why any club would change its name to include its sponsor just for a shedload of money....oooh wait a minute, maybe its the money!

Personally I do not have any issue with a name change as long as the name reflects the town which the club represents, ie Gravesham Borough, Gravesham United or whatever.

I do however have a major issue with any name change that gives no mention of Gravesham (or Gravesend, or Northfleet).

Ebbsfleet for god's sake is in the Borough of Dartford!

Working on the assumption that it is a "name change" that is required for any New Sponsorship deal, then surely the issue has already been decided regardless of input from fans on Tuesday Night?

With the Fleet surprisingly ditching Austrian Airlines (given the trouble last season with finding a sponsor) its clear another sponsor must have been found. A name change maybe 1 of the conditions.

I can understand why the Club may take the "cash" and rename the Club. Its not fair to expect a few individuals to keep supplementing the Club.

However, if we win the Conference in the near future and the League Table reads "Ebbsfleet FC etc" rather than "Gravesend and Northfleet F.C." thats going to go down in history forever. Its taking away a little bit of the Clubs "Soul" in my view.

You are right - for the time being. The Ebbsfleet development is being finance via central government, the KCC, Gravesham and Dartford councils aka Kent Thameside and most significantly, Land Securities.
Ebbsfleet is NOT all in Dartford. The first Ebbsfleet quarter is now underway at Springhead - entirely within Gravesham. Another quarter to be called Northfleet Rise (adjacent to the actual International station itself) is also in Gravesham.
Thus the Fleet could theoretically use 'Ebbsfleet' justifiably.
Another factor is, of course, that Ebbsfleet is very close to Gravesend - just 2 miles from the town centre and is well inside the Gravesend urban envelope.
I cannot see the 'moneymen' pushing for the Fleet to be called Gravesham or retaining the status quo - although it would be a pleasant surprise.
I feel that in time, Gravesham and Dartford will be forced into a unitary authority 'marriage', thus eliminating the Ebbsfleet border conumdrum once and for all.

OK We will have to go with Ebbsfleet GNFC.

Ebbsfleet Park by the way, used to be behind Northfleet Station and was reclaimed by the APCM to build railway sidings for their rolling stock. Part of it is now the new road. A pretty little park with a bandstsnd, childrens swings, slide and roundabouts with the Ebbsfleet running along the perimeter and a twee footbridge leading to the APCM sports ground. Having been born and bred in Gravesend and lived in Northfleet, I personally have no problem with a name change to Ebbsfleet if needs must.

It will still be. FOLLOW THE FLEET

In the short to medium term the perception of outsiders may well see Ebbsfleet as no more than a high speed international station. However, the idea of Ebbsfleet being just a 'parkway' station is long over. The remit now is for Ebbsfleet to become a destination in it's own right. Hence the multi billion pound investment in creating a new linear city - incoporating Eastern Quarry (6500 homes) Ebbsfleet itself (hotels, skyscrapers etc), Swanscombe, and Bluewater. Gravesend it seems may once again have to fight for its survival as a retail centre.
