7 pm – gates open, ‘Sorry you can’t come in’, says the gatekeeper. ‘We don’t know if it’s on, the pitch is too hard’. Referee comes out to inspect. Enter Sir Gary at the gallop. Five minutes later out comes Sir Gary – ‘all sorted, it’s on’ he says, ‘where’s the nearest chip shop?’ Spectators pile in, both of them. The pitch is being sanded. To be precise, the gaping cracks are being filled in with sand. Team unchanged. Crowd between one hundred and 150, and not a single home supporter to be found. Five minutes to the start, the tea bar opens. No tannoy announcements, main stand closed.

 

Tilbury made a good start, Adejokun heading just wide from a free kick by Jamie Cross. Tilbury again, this time King heading over from Gray. With Urchins back peddling, Purdie conceded a corner, which Jamie Cross took, but swerved the ball into the side net. Tilbury faded after their bright start, and Foyewa was put away on the right wing by a long Fiddes pass, with Parker not able to reach the curving centre. Lee gained possession in midfield and sent Foyewa away, his cross being touched on by Parker to Lee, who swivelled and hammered in an unstoppable shot, which Neil did miraculous well to stop, turning the ball over the bar. Janney’s corner found Foyewa, and Reed headed the cross away, with Fletcher returning the ball into the goalmouth where Neil fielded the ball under pressure from Lee and Parker. Garry Cross then won the ball in midfield and slotted an excellent pass between two defenders, but there was no one able to run on and Neil gathered. Parker then sent over a good cross from which Foyewa headed just inches over the bar as Urchins stepped up the pace.

 

A shock for Urchins when Adejokun found himself with a clear run at goal from a long clearance and Brightly raced out of goal, with Adejokun seeing his shot roll wide of the goal. A free kick was awarded instead of the goal kick, reason unknown, taken by Cross, with Brightly saving well. Urchins began to force the pace, and Parker found Foyewa who won a corner. Foyewa took the kick and Fletcher took the short pass and floated the ball over, where Harris cleared but only as far as Amos who was fouled and the free kick was taken on the edge of the area close to the goalline, and McFarlane’s header was deflected out for a corner, which Janney sent to Tomlinson, who hard drive was well saved by Neil. Cross almost put Foyewa through, King tackling, but King was then injured in a sortie upfield and was eventually replaced by Hadley. Foyewa and Cross combined to win a corner which Amos took and McFarlane went close. Lee was almost through but was stopped by Harris, and from the free kick which resulted Fletcher picked out Parker whose shot was blocked, and the rebound fell to Fletcher whose shot was also blocked amid a mass of defenders. Purdie to Foyewa, and thence to Janney, and on to Parker and Simon’s shot skimmed the bar.

 

Sensation – a Tilbury supporter arrived, just in time to see Neil make a good save from Foyewa who had been put through by Parker, complete with new hair cut, sans pony tail. Adejokun again raced through the middle on a solo run to try to reach a high bouncing clearance, but Purdie shepherded the ball out of play, and then it was Amos coming back to tackle when Gray moved upfield, Fletcher completing the clearance. Right on half time Amos broke down the right, Gray made and excellent tackle, Amos got the ball back, and Gray tackled again, this time conceding a corner. Cross floated the ball over, up jumped Smart, but KRIS LEE jumped higher and headed powerfully home, the volume of noise being such that the nearby caravan sites were lit up as everyone rushed out to find out what was happening.

 

One nil at half time and a search party was sent out to try to find the missing light bulbs but eventually it was decided that the floodlights must have been on all the time. Sir Gary was still looking for the directors box, and the tea bar ran out of ketchup. The search party returned, and reported that they had found two home supporters, both in the bar.

 

Urchins as per usual stepped up a gear in the second half. Amos to Lee, and on to Tomlinson, and through to Parker who was through but was pulled up for offside, and then a long Purdie pass saw Parker again clear, this time winning a corner, which Foyewa took and McFarlane glanced wide. A free kick to Urchins almost on the half way line, and Purdie found SIMON PARKER who ran on to score in typical Simon Parker fashion, and at last the one hundred Urchins in the crowd found their collective voice. It was all one way from now on, the siege of the Alamo, or to be precise, the siege of St Chads.

 

Urchins in total control, and Amos cut in from the right, and hammered his shot into the side netting. Not to be outdone, Lee homed in from the left and hammered his shot into the side netting. In a very rare home move, Harris played a long free kick deep into the goalmouth where Brightly saved well , and straight away powered the ball back towards the other end, where Lee’s first time drive cannoned out off a defender, and Janney switched play to the other side to Foyewa, who put his centre just over the bar. Tomlinson came forward and sent Parker away, Simon ran on and lobbed the ball over Neil and just over the bar.

 

And then it was three. Kris Lee started the move, sending SIMON PARKER away, and Simon outpaced the defence to slip the ball home. Smart was booked for expressing his dismay at the goal, and Tilbury kicked off again. 26 seconds later it was four, when it was KRIS LEE’s turn to run through and thunder the ball into the net. Party time, as Urchins played some of their best football of the season – had there been a tannoy, they would have played Sweet Georgia Brown, for this was pure entertainment, unless you happened to be one of the two Tilbury supporters. Even the home bench was quiet, something almost unknown. But Jamie Cross swerved a corner over the bar, and the same player brought a good save out of Brightly with a well flighted free kick. Then it was back to the other end, with Foyewa being stopped by Harris, who gave away the corner, with Janney finding McFarlane who headed over. Lee then played Sadler through and Neil came out to save, whilst Adam Parker gave Fiddes a good opening from which Fiddes won a free kick and found Lee who was inches over with his shot. Brightly saved from Reed, and then again from Jones, turning the shot out for a corner, which Smart headed powerfully at goal and Brightly saved again. Lee then sent Simon Parker away and Simon raced goalwards, to hammer his shot hard against the bar, the rebound falling to Gasper, and with the Urchins following all shouting goal, they were quickly silenced when the ball swerved around the post at the last second. Gasper to Sadler and back again, and Ainsley’s shot was blocked. Fiddes to Lee, whose shot was touched out for a corner, Gasper sent the ball over, and it was headed out for another corner, which Gasper floated over again and Harris headed out. The final few minutes saw Urchins doing everything but score, as Tilbury held out amid constant pressure. Three more points, one hundred up, another clean sheet, and 93 goals.
