Reality Check

Recommended Posts

Yes it was all very disapointing, quite clearly Southport wanted the 3 points more than the ' Fleet. But lets put it all into perspective.

This season really has had its ups and downs - 1-4 against Stafford, 0-4 against Southport, the loss against Chelmsford in the FA Cup and the loss against Northwich Victoria in the trophy. Compare those games against the 1-0 against Oxford United, the 3-1 against Exeter City, 2-0 against York City.

As I say it really has been a season of ups and downs. The sad thing is though that the current crop of players that represent Gravesend and Northfleet are able to turn-up when they play against the so called top sides and usually struggle against the so called poorer sides. Tactics? attitude? the reasons who knows. The truth of the matter is that the club has and will no doubt continue to "punch above its weight", many of the current squad are really just average players, players that have at times excelled themselves and on other occasions played to their standard.

Yes it would have been great to see the 'Fleet in the play-offs, a position that would have exceeded everyone's expectations at the start of the season. It wasn't to be and having got so close I am as disapointed as anyone.

The sadest thing about yesterday was the fact that many of the 1400 or so there, were first time 'supporters'. As one standing near to me said, "its the first time I've been here and it will be my last" Yesterday was indeed a day of lost opportunity.

Yesterday's game really was like pushing a self destruct button-new fans that won't be back , other "fans" that won't be back this season . Make no bones about it , we need some quality signings this summer - 3 more Sacha's ought to do it ? But people will return to the terraces ... it just takes results/a good cup tie/shrewd marketing/a couple of big transfers/a new ground/ect etc ... not too much to ask is it ? Real fans will never stop supporting their team ... that's what support is all about .

I saw people there yesterday I have not seen for years, what a waste of a good a chance to get them back. A case of the punters turned up but the team didnt, and that is something that should be sorted out in the dressing room and quick, as its not the first time this season that the players looked like they would sooner be some where else, and that soon spreads to the terraces, so I can only but agree with you JP.

The end of season, no interest game next saturday v St albans will attract about 800 fans, wen it could so easily have been 1800 if we had something to play for. The local cricket leagues start that day, I would have not played if Fleet had something to play for,but I guess like the majority, thursday will be the last game for many watchers, unless a miracle happens.

If southport show same resolve v York and Exeter, who knows, but suspect in many peoples mind the damage is done.

Oh well, always a weekend in Torquay to loook forward to !!
