Why all the negativity both on and off the pitch?

Recommended Posts

God forbid the players and club staff ever reading this message board, if they do then I hope they don't take it too personally. I have been recently criticised by one bloke for being far too negative, yeah that’s right, me, no I couldn't believe it either. I hope he reads all the messages on here then he can see I'm one of the less negative ones.

Every match now for us is a bonus, we've achieved our expectancy levels and now just have to see out the season. If we make the play offs, bonus. If we don't then big deal. Everyone has to stop looking at every game as a cup final if you do you'll enjoy the game.

Now on to the club. Congratulations to them for trying out lots of new ideas with regards to getting new supporters. It is no easy task when you have Gillingham and Charlton to contend with plus a whole host of London clubs. Hopefully the club do read this message board and take back with them the constructive criticism.

Which brings me to my next point, Roly Edwards’ programme notes.

The bit in question was as follows "I have read many ideas, comments and opinions on our forum that in many cases have merit. What would be useful though is for those individuals to back up their case by coming forward and us put their ideas into place. I find it a cheap shot to constantly criticise the club from the living room, why not try the option of approaching an official of the club in person, you may find it works."

I'm sure you all know what the guy means. Every week we have a new thread about how crap attendances are with good ideas put forward. The club don't have time to troll the forum looking for what we have to say in way of ideas and neither would you expect them to. Running the club is a difficult enough task so add on to this that they have their normal day job as well. What you could do in future is take the idea to them and see how it goes. If its good enough to put on here then why not? If you do this however don't forget to include your forum name.

Intresting post Paul.

The big issue for me is that the club are full time on the pitch , but appear part time of the pitch. Certain roles will always be part time (turnstile ops , stewards etc) but other roles must be full time.

Image is everything. From the outside , we look run down , desperate , and cashless.

I appreciate that money needs to be pointed towards the team , but am a firm believer that a few hours spent every week outside tidying things up will give a better image of the club.

On the pitch , we need to show a more professional approach to the paying public. I am not talking about the team , but the things around the edges.

The announcements before , at half time and during the game have improved significantly. The half time entertainment is a farce. at least give cliff a tracksuit and make him look half decent if he is representing the club in front of 1000+ people. Were those trousers or shorts he wore yesterday.

As for numbers through the gate , more consideration needs to be made to local issues (gillingham , charlton at home). As jason said on the radio yesterday , work with Charlton and learn from them. I still believe that a tie in deal with them is possible. Maybe £6 entry for Charlton season ticket holders (if charlton are away , not playing) .

To push these ideas to the club , needs one common channel and not loads of people sending emails , calling etc.

As for reading the forums , it should be the responsibility of one person to read the forum to gauge opinion on all non team matters. That person should not respond but take ideas forward.

I dont think its being negative that is the issue , but lack of information coming out. In my full time role , and indeed most full time managerial roles , a large amount of discontent among the troops is lack of information. The paying customers are your troops.

I am quite happy for players & club staff to read my posts as, in my opinion, my posts are very good ( ha !) and in no way a criticism of any player or official of the club. Your post is quite good as well !!

Cheers,
