Now that the AFC Wimbledon issue has been resolved, can anyone explain to me how the FA settled on a 3 point deduction for an ineligible player who played several games for them?

What is to stop any team from knowingly fielding an ineligible player all season knowing that if they get caught they can only be deducted 3 points!

The inconsistency of the FA's decisions?

I suspect the decision came about from the fact that, had they got clearance for him, he would have been free to play - therefore, the FA have effectively simply penalised them for failing to complete the paperwork.

Had they been playing an individual who was banned for, say 6 games, and they knowingly, or otherwise, played him as a result of failing to complete paperwork, they would presumably be penalised more in line with the results of those 6 games.
