U18 v Lordswood

Away to Lordswood in the John Ullmann Cup and a trip to Chatham. With several key players missing this was not going to be an easy task for the side. Getting off to a good start Lordswood missed a sitter, skying the ball way over the goal when a tap-in would have done the job. This set the run of the game as Lordswood missed chance after chance with very poor shooting, and Margate ran their luck. After 5 easy chances it looked like despite Margates lack of any form they might nick one. Half time and nil, nil. Margate picked up the pace a little but really Lordswood were the better side as the play continued as in the first half. Then one a several corners was not dealt with by Lordswood, ball pinging around came to Arron who managed to connect 5 yards out for the lead. Lordswood lost momentum and the Gate held on for 40 of the 45 minutes when a quick break on the left put a man through, a neat cross for a tap-in, one all and into extra time. Both sides looked tired and made little headway in the first 15. Second half gave Lordswood a chance and the ball was in the Gates net for 2-1. Battling back and with only a couple of minutes to go the ball fell to Elliot in space, taking a half shot the ball came off a defender, casually rolling past the keeper for 2-2. Margate had a fair chance to win in the last seconds but it came to the dreaded penalties.

In short, Lordswood scored all five whilst the Gate had one saved and out of the Cup. A long way short of the Gates true form, at home the lads would have seen Lordswood off. Hartsdown hs become fortress Hartsdown for this side as the fine pitch allows football to be played. A long day, over 6 hours all-in-all. Tommorow they have to go to Croydon!!!! for another Cup game. Best of Luck lads.

No disgrace losing in penalties, but sure the guys are gutted.

Good test for them tomorrow to see if they have both physical and mental strength to get a win at Croydon, coming so soon after a disappointment

Good luck, and thanks DG for taking the trouble to post

Have to hold my hand up here Dutch and say I do not know all the lads sir names. Can not answer this evening as they are on their way to Croydon. I was going up to give some support but early starts have got the better of me, I really wanted to go. I will be phoning through the evening so hope to post news and result by 2130 today. It could be a l-o-n-g journey home or a short one depending on result.
