v Burton

Recommended Posts

Not a brilliant first half, had all the hall marks of a last day of the season match with neither team having anything to play for. Why then, when the two teams were pushing for a play off place, did it feel like that?

Second half a lot better for the Fleet. We attacked with urgency and suddenly seemed interested. Very good second half and I think we well deserved to get something from the game. A draw was probably a fair result but if only we had played as well in the first as we did in the second we would have got the three points.

I thought it was great to see us do our bit for comic relief in the first half. Well done lads. Second half much better. Agree with Harry, the urgency shown was needed. My only question. Why doesn't Lance throw the Bl**dy out. Not only does he keep hoofing it up the field but points to where he's going to put it. On a day like today with a swirling wind and 6ft plus defenders it's absolutely pointless. To me Sacha was MOM by a long way. What passion that bloke has. For a 0-0 I thought it was thoroughly entertaining. Well done to Liam and the boys.

Agree with most of that DA11... well, I might split hairs with you over this bit:

How in hell did Charlie's shot stay out? What did it hit? I was already jumping up and down celebrating.

I thought the first half was the worst display of football from two sides at the same time since we were in the Rymans, as Harry said unbelievably poor when you consider both sides were supposed to be pushing for a play-off spot.

The second half inevitably was a slight improvement although both sides still seemed to think that kicking the ball as high as possible constitutes attacking play. doh

Three good saves, one from each keeper and one from the post and both sides left with one point more than they deserved.

On todays evidence I think Burton and ourselves will be fighting it out for seventh and eight spot.

Spot on Slarti. At one stage I felt embarrased and I never get like that with the Fleet. This long ball game is disasterous. When we started passing in the 2nd half it was like a totally different team out there. Their no.7 Darren Stride was an awesome player. Cleaning up at the back very well. Is McCarthy back for the shots game and does anyone know how far away Hawkins is from fitness. We talk about the size of our squad and monies etc being the reason for us tailing off but I think it has more to do with our style of play and being very one dimensional.

I agree that the first half was instantly forgettable. One matter though. How is Danny Slatter? He looked in some discomfort when he had to trek slowly around almost half of the pitch to the tunnel

The second half was a lot better. Agree about the ball being in the air. I thought it would qualify for honoury membership of NASA seeing how long it was well and truly off the ground!

Also I couldn't believe how Charlies lob that beat the keeper failed to go in. It appeared to hit a post, spin out and hit a divot and then bounce across the goal and out of play. The ref awarded us a corner, but I don't think that their 'keeper got anywhere near to the ball.

About the run in. Burton did not have a full compliment of fit subs on the bench today. They have a number of injured players. I was speaking to one of their officials at half time and he said that they have a small squad. He thought that they might just miss out on a play-off spot. One of their remaining games is away to Oxford.

Friday at home to Aldershot, who I think we have yet to beat while in the Conference, is a very important game for us. Let us hope that the team selected can turn in a 5 star performance.

I wondered how long it would take...

Agree with everyone else's thoughts about today really, first half awful, second half was good. I was up and out of my chair for Charlie's lob, it was going in all the way I swear, wind!! Agree with thought for Sacha for MOTM, he was amazing in defence today. Also thought Stacy had a good game as he always does, makes a big difference to our midfield. With macca back I am still feeling quitly confident about our season.

Maybe I should have qualified my previous 'Burton and us will be fighting for seventh and eighth place' comment....finishing in the top eight would be an absolutely fantastic achievement and far better than even our most optimistic supporter could have hoped for, although obviously it won't be good enough to stop the 'tea hut brigade' or the 'Daish hasn't got a clue club' from practising their art.

Come back with that statement when we're in the bottom 10. It may not be as good as it was but this team is far from 'a joke'.

As many people have said. A top 10 finish at the start of the season would have been widely accepted by most fans. The trouble is when you have been occupying a place off spot for some time the prospect of promotion becomes a dream and maybe we become a little blinkered. I dont think the wheels are coming off the wagon. In fact I dont think they have been fixed properly all season but they have done the job that has been required. We may not be as good as we think we are but the results have been good for us. Someone said there were a number of games we could lose and still have a chance of the play offs. Unfortuately these defeats have come in a block booking but after the second half display yesterday..BRING ON ALDERSHOT...We may not have the biggest fan base around but I honestly believe we have the best. So that means us true fans must stick together and give it all we've got.

On a traditional and personal note....BRING BACK " HERE COME THE FLEET" God I miss that tune.

Get in there...Up the Fleet

A couple of others around me yesterday were saying there was a GNFC player with 24 on his shirt/sweatshirt on the subs bench, yet there is no 24 on the programme, is this a loaned player, just a misread number or just a mix of kit.

It says a lot about yesterdays game that three different people have named Sasha as their man of the match.

I thought Sasha did ok defensively and made a few 'totally commited' tackles which are always nice to see and he looked comfortable in the left back role.

I can't remember him contributing too much when we were attacking and although his distribution was better than the brothers Smith and Mark Ricketts it was still pretty much kick it as far as you can and hope. I wouldn't disagree with making him man of the match but I wish it took a bit more than a couple of hard tackles to win the accolade.
