Gary don't take this personally as I like your post's, they're great but do you mean to say that if you didn't have a meeting at your daughters school this afternoon then you'd make the trip up?

Put it this way, I have to do the school run, then make dinner for wife and kids after 3.30. Wife gets home from work at 4pm.

I would have done (and more often than not did) when I was young free and single. Trips to Merthyr, Dorchester, Scarborough and even Newport Isle of Wight were all done regularly, and great fun they were , too.

But with marriage and young families comes responsibilities and watching family budgets.

So to answer you, no I wouldn't/couldn't make it anyway, a) bacause of time constraints, and B) cost.

All this may come to you one day, Harry, so enjoy the freedom of being footloose, single and all the benefits that come with it.

As I said, I will be heartily chering you all on tonight next to my radio.

Exactly Gary. I simply don't have the constraints that many have. If I want to go, I go and it's that simple.

Then why feel the need to offer said meeting as an 'excuse'?

Maybe it had something to do with this....

It just seems unnecessary for you to say the reason you weren't going last night was because you had a meeting at your daughter's school, when in fact you would not have made the trip anyway, as this perfectly valid reason

I didn't offer my posting as an excuse - it was a reason for not going.

An excuse implies something wrong or a mistake has been made and the excuse is used to justify the error.

A reason is simply that. No mistakes or percieved ill intentions are present, no guilt is inplied, therefore no excuse or apology is needed.

The definitions are listed thus:

"• Definition of “Excuse”

• accept an excuse for; "Please excuse my dirty hands"

• grant exemption or release to; "Please excuse me from this class"

• serve as a reason or cause or justification of; "Your need to sleep late does not excuse your late arrival at work"; "Her recent divorce may explain her reluctance to date again"

• a defense of some offensive behavior or some failure to keep a promise etc.; "he kept finding excuses to stay"; "every day he had a new alibi for not getting a job"; "his transparent self-justification was unacceptable"

• apologize: defend, explain, clear away, or make excuses for by reasoning; "rationalize the child's seemingly crazy behavior"; "he rationalized his lack of success"

• a note explaining an absence; "he had to get his mother to write an excuse for him"

• ask for permission to be released from an engagement

• excuse, overlook, or make allowances for; be lenient with; "excuse someone's behavior"; "She condoned her husband's occasional infidelities"

• apology: a poor example; "it was an apology for a meal"; "a poor excuse for an automobile"

Definition of “reason”

• a rational motive for a belief or action; "the reason that war was declared"; "the grounds for their declaration"

• an explanation of the cause of some phenomenon; "the reason a steady state was never reached was that the back pressure built up too slowly"

• the capacity for rational thought or inference or discrimination; "we are told that man is endowed with reason and capable of distinguishing good from evil"

• rationality: the state of having good sense and sound judgment; "his rationality may have been impaired"; "he had to rely less on reason than on rousing their emotions"

• decide by reasoning; draw or come to a conclusion; "We reasoned that it was cheaper to rent than to buy a house"

• cause: a justification for something existing or happening; "he had no cause to complain"; "they had good reason to rejoice"

• argue: present reasons and arguments

• a fact that logically justifies some premise or conclusion; "there is reason to believe he is lying"

• think logically; "The children must learn to reason"

Was it a good game seems a more relevent question than my motives for not going?
