Promotion or step backwards ???

Having watched on many occasions this year do you think the appointment of SL has been positive or a step backwards for the club. We should of been guaranteed promotion this year but poor form has let us down and we are in danger of slipping backwards not forwards. I hear we had some good people apply for the post but i hear the final decision was not a footballing one but more based on SL job in industry ??? rumour or truth ???

Either way we are struggling in a poor league once a gain ???

Any comments ??? positive words please !!!

I think its a good decision. The team looks fitter than last year but still a bit lightweight.

Players that I didn't rate have come throught to be the best at the club. Mr Lane very approachable.

The only negative thing is his constant abuse of the officials even if they have got it right!

For me I thought we would get relegated this year as we had a poor pre season. I was impressed with our start but when the weather and the pitches became poor so did our performance.

If we stay down then its not the end of the world and at the moment I don't think we deserve to go up.

We als0 have to realise that we have no divine right to go up.

If this is the same anonymous who knows the budget of every club in the division then I'm surprised he needs to ask the question when he already seems to know eveything anyway!

When you come out with comments like 'I hear the decision was not a footballing one' you are intimating that you have 'the ears' of members of the board who made that decision whilst, at the same time, virtually accusing them of knowing nothing about football!

To throw your question back at you, how many of the alleged 'good people' who applied for the job are currently in successful management positions?

I think if you took a poll of the fans who came last season and told them that they would have been thinking about promotion early in the season and disappointed that we may only finish mid table they would have grabbe dthat with both hands. Last season was horrific, there was very little to look forward to and pre-season, as previously mentioned, was pretty poor. Simon has got a team that can clearly play good football, has a good atmosphere about it and,if he can keep it together and strengthen it a bit, is capable of getting us promoted and mving the club forward. However, if after half a season having taken over and having to build pretty much a new team you think he has failed then you clearly have no idea about how difficult it is to get the right mix of players and make them gel. Simon's only real problem was that the team played extremely well early on and probably overacheived everyon'e expectations (remember Hampton & R game?). give it a chance, let the team grow and remember, there is a long time to go in this season, and if we don't go up this year then next year we will be stronger and better prepared (with a better pitch!!!).

Unlike most of the nameless creeps (human beings have names, only insects are anonymous) posting on this forum, I have no supernatural insight into our current budget, our budget for last year, or anybody else's for that matter. So I can't comment on value for money to the club.

But I'd like to comment on value for money to the fans.

We passed last season's total of goals scored in November.

We passed last season's total of points scored in January.

Simon has put together a side full of young, fast and intelligent footballers and given them the tactics to beat anybody on their day.

My analysis of our team right now would be:

Goal scoring - has never been a problem.

Defending - Has some troubles early on, sorted out within a month or so. Started creeping back in, mostly as a result of injuries and suspensions (see below) leading to continually changing personnel.

Injuries - everybody gets these. Maybe we've been unluckier than most. Players who are prepared to run at defenders will get more knocks than others, but the majority of sports injuries are genuinely accidental, so who knows?

Suspensions - Our biggest issue. It's fair to say that some players only put in a good performance if they are a little bit fired up, but this needs to be channelled into aggressive football, not retaliation or badmouthing officials (which, by the way lads, is our job - not yours.)

Tactics - On a good surface, superb. On a mudbath, we need something different. Needs attention.

Summary - This season is orders of magnitude better than last season (sorry Dave C) and there's no reason to assume it won't get better yet.
