Hello Ladyhawk and others

There was no rain forecast and the skies were bluish, the early ref wanted to give it a full chance to dry out.

The Chad's people were working on the pitch which tells everyone there was a chance of playing.

Unfortunately it did not pay off but they did their best.

If they had got the game on like we did previous Saturday then there would have been a big Well Done. But because it was not a million miles away a lunchtime scenario was the verdict.

these are tough decisions to make for officials at the moment as the sensible ones amongst them understand only too well what a cancelled game means to a club in lack of revenue terms...I suspect that this is the reason why the ref at Tilbury gave every posibble chance for the game to proceed...if so well done to him..

we have two home games this week...tuesday and saturday...the much needed revenue from those two games will pay a lot of bills and we are more fortunate than most with generous officials etc....some clubs must be in dire financial straits at the moment...

Good point Unc. I remember playing in the old boys league a few years back, we had weeks of no game and no revenues and all we did was keep a block booking on a manky old pitch at £50 a week! So goodness knows how bad it must be for clubs paying out high ground rents and staffing fees.

It was a pain on Saturday, I travelled from Isleworth by train, but as you say, I'm sure they did their best to get the game on. I just hope that the rain stays away for a week or so, as the river levels seem so high there is little chance of the water standing on these pitches to sink in or run away.

its the worst wet weather I can recall for many a year but we need to get our two games on this week...not just because of the revenue either....6 points from our two games this week would effectively make anyone catching us almost impossible unless we commit hari kari.... which we won't...there is always a point in a season where one week is critical and without wishing to be dramatic about it... I think its this one...

colin and the players will spend the thursday training session on the pitch getting it ready for saturday...we just need arms and legs today and tomorrow to ensure the Witham game goes ahead...

Not sure if it's quite as bad as 2001. We already had alot of fixtures to make up that season because of our runs in the Cup and Trophy but the weather was awfully wet until April/May.

I lost count of the amount of games postponed or abandoned that season and it affected so many clubs not just ourselves.

in my opinion games should have a deadline of 10am wwhen they call it off.If the game is in any sort of doubt then it shouldn't go ahead.Due to travelling fans.

This should apply to all games in the U.K.Fans have to shell out enough money on football as it is nowadays(non league exluded for the most part)and if a game looks unplayable at 10am then 80% of the time the game will still be unplayable at 3pm.

With a 10am deadline at least some people would be able to plan their day to do something else

thats too simple rob...firstly only the match ref can call the game off so if a club get a local ref in to inspect he still has to telephone the match ref who doesn't have to take his advice (which is what happened on saturday at tilburger)...

in todays NL 'revenue shortage climate' due to recent postponements... the refs are giving every opportunity to the home club to play these games...most NL clubs are also very part time so I would also assume that most of them are not even open at 10am on a match saturday.....evening games I agree are a little more sensitive for obvious reasons and perhaps a 5pm deadline would be practical in those circumstances...tilbury however still had to pay their wages on saturday without a shilling going through the gate so it is understandable that they wanted every opportunity to play the match...

it is difficult getting a happy balance for everyone concerned...

i agree with you regarding lower league football but as far as league football is concerned surely if refs are getting paid they should be at the ground 3-4 hours before kick off.

with leagues like ours the expenses for fans are minimal for the most part and maybe a 12 noon inspection would surfice.

Good news for us. Hopefully Sudbury will suffer something of a fixture pile up.
