Tilbury match OFF

|Sadly in spite of two phone calls, which said that the game was on, plus the ryman league website saying we were playing, my 2 and a half hour journey into Tilbury hell was wasted. Only when I got to the club after walking from the station, did I find out the situation. Not best pleased, but hey ho.

Must say that's the last time I visit Tilbury without armed escort.

sadly thats the way of it sometimes WU and well done on making the effort....the players and staff and other fans also had wasted journeys but as I said in another thread...only the ref can call it off and the first one to inspect the pitch at 10am decided to leave it until the match ref arrived at 1.30...

it has been a bad few weeks weather wise...I reckon a lot of clubs are facing harsh financial difficulties at the moment due to lack of home game revenue...can't blame tilbury for wanting to play the game...

lets hope we can get our game on for tuesday...

We got to Tilbury at about 2pm - just as Peter Butcher came out and told me it was off.

There were a lot of cars there already, most of them with Urchins stickers in them, so I guess quite a lot had already made the trip. To confirm Unc's comment, I was also told that the local ref had been reluctant to call it off, though 70 percent of the pitch was not playable. My philosophy is simple - if the match is not officially called off, then I travel, even if I already know it is an almost certain wasted trip. And I could not leave it any later, otherwise we ran the risk of getting stuck in traffic and missing the start.

On the approach to Tilbury there were signs of heavy flooding in the fields - the MarDyke was in one part about one hundred yards wide instead of its more normal five yards wide.

We got back easily to Grays where the pitch is on the higher part of Grays and it was in reasonable condition, though very soft.

Have to say the away supporters got a poor deal, being located in the far corner of the ground.

Problem is with the match being called off so late is that it gives you little time to do anything else or go and see another game so effectively you've wasted an afternoon.

Luckily Grays was just down the road but it's frustrating when you get to the ground and the match is called off. We had it at Dagenham a few years ago.

Luckily our recent matches with Enfield Town and Wivenhoe were called off hours before kick off giving me plenty of time to make alternative plans.
