Westley leaves Nene Park

Graham Westley has this evening been relieved of his duties as manager of Rushden & Diamonds Football Club with immediate effect.

The Club have decided that performances and squad selection do not fit with its long term plan.

The Club wishes to make no further comment on the matter and the search for a successor to Graham will start immediately.

The Club wishes to thank Graham for all that he has done during his short tenure at Nene Park.

R & D can state what they like as the public reasons for his departure, but as the victories include games against Oxford and Dagenham & R, the real reason is unlikely to be about his footballing ability. Most of the R & D fans appeared to have been more than happy with his achievements. I wonder if the rumours that a certain Mr G H might be appointed are near the mark?

Perhaps the R & D board didn't want to get a reputation as one of the most reviled, despised teams in the Conference, which is what happens to every team that Westley takes over.

And apparently the want Garry Hill to take over!!!!

And this amusing, but revealing posting was lifted from the Rushden forum:-

"When manage of farnborough Town he produced a team of thugs that did reasonably well but he had a tremendous habit of saying idiotic things thus making Farnborough an unpopular club .. He also made himself the total lord and master of that football club kicking out anyone who dared to comment on his own personal opinions .. Also because of the thuggery he had to have a bigger squad than normal to cover the suspensions and all of these players were on well paid contracts

Farnborough then drew arsenal in the FA cup , the tie was reversed so it could be played at Highbury .. 2 Days after the game he quit taking the money with him and it was found half the side were employed by his own company and not FTFC .. not only did this leave farnborough short of players but unable to pay the ones they had left thus the problems they have at the moment

He went to Stevange .. produced a team of thugs and a large squad ( starting to sound familiar ) .. Stevenage quickly became the most hated club in the Conference because of Westley and his digs at other clubs .. Even though they reached the playoff final Chipmunk was causing so much embarrassmen the fans turned against him..Also I have heard rumours and I will admit only rumours that he has left financial problems behind ..

In the short term he has been a succesful manager but when things are not going well he will blame everyone but himself , the first thing he does at any club is remove the dressing room leader .. and then he brings in thugs on high wages , this results in a very boring side to watch... he may have looked good in the short term but in the long term will leave more problems than he cures .. he also takes over clubs who are desperate ie he came to Aldershot before he went to Farnborough but was told to bugger off ... Clubs who are desperate will not tell him to do this because they are desperate for a short term fix.

some points to remember

No 1 he lives on his Ego

no 2 he brings in high wager earners

no 3 Any money he puts in he takes back

no 4 he will blame the club cat for a defeat rather than himself

no 5 his gob becomes a huge embarrasment to the club he is at

no 6 Rushden will now not become the most hated club in the Conference

no 7 I suspect you chairman has sussed the damage he was starting to do to R and D , to many of you this would not have become apparent until the middle of next season and by then the players he wanted would have been inplace on long term contracts , you would have been unable to get rid of them without a huge expense and basicaly been at his beck and call

".

Written by an Aldershot supporter, but very perceptive nevertheless.

And generally agreed with by the Rushden faithfull.

THe forum thread is actually quite articulate and makes very good reading.

That's a good call Dave - but do Crawley have the long term funds to fulfil Westley's needs?

Does Westley actually have THAT much money that he can buy a club?

I thought he just used rich sugar daddies.

He, like Hill always seem to need huge budgets to succeed.

I wonder whether a certain Andy Ford would be more interested in the Crawley job, especially as it is only a 40 minute commute?

Hill's already bringing Hales in with him. Wonder will the whole travelling circus include Gary Calder, who's hopped from Hornchurch to Weymouth with him too.

Discussion on Rushden's forum suggests Hill's brother, Colin, something big in property, may also get involved.

Thank god we don't have managers with an entourage like that!
