Who Is Billericay Town's Best Player Ever

Andy Walsh

Well it's certainly not anyone playing at Billericay at the moment with the exception of Jerome John.

Our midfield is awful Penn and Williams are not playing that well this season and they can't score many goals.

Two of the best players we had were Carthy and Essandoh but we got rid of them for a small amount of money and haven't replaced them well enough. Other good players have left in the past few years such as Baker and Linger. We need a better manager to bring in better players if we are going to get anywhere near making the Conference.

Some of our better past players were people like Steve Jones, I agree Gutzmore was one of our best players.

Hmmm tough question - do you go for somebody who only produced their best for 1 season or do you go for somebody who although arguably less talented has been a great servant to the club like Mooro?

Some of my favourite players in the years I've been watching (in no particular order):

Paul Battram, Chris Moore, Martin St. Hilaire, Joe Baker, JJ

The team that won promotion from div 1 provided some great memories as well although not necessarily brilliant players they came together well as a team.

This is a difficult one as there was a period of time when I wasn't a regular so I can't comment on Steve Jones and the like. It is also a difficult one 'cos we all have our personal fav's based not just on talent but personality.

I can comment on players of the '70's, 80's and late '90's to present... so here goes

Best Keeper - JJ

Best defender - Steve Bone (unlike Chris Moore, who has showed the club loads of loyalty and is a rock in our defence at the mo, Steve scored a few goals from what I remember). Billy Goldstone for timing of tackles and humour

Best midfielder - (bloody hell - struggling here as I'm sure I don't want to be leaning to much to the '70's glory days and I am crap at names). There was Dean Parrott, who on his day was not only creative but could win the ball, Paul Scott (was he a midfielder?), Joe Baker (shame he faded - was this a reaction to the way he was treated) and Martin Carthy (again, treated badly in my opinion). All of these players had their moments but I always liked Justin Gentle (okay he is a winger) and his 2nd half away against Bedford last season will always stick in my mind as the best 45 minutes I have ever seen someone play in the blue shirt.

Forward / Striker - Gotta be Doug Young. Okay the level of football was lower than we are playing now but he had loads of personality, talent and scored loads of goals.

Looking at the team today, I would say that we have a good side but would agree that there is something missing (a creative midfield player would be nice). Not wishing to have a go at the present management, is it really helpful to constantly shout, scream, swear (okay we all do it at times) at the players? I dunno but there appears to be more of that than encouragement (GC and GB do sometimes, I've heard 'em) on the touch line at the mo. Maybe it works but I would like to hear more "geeing up" of the players by hearing words of encouragement. Maybe we will get a better reaction from players? Just an observation...

Best Goalie

Mark Tyler came on loan from Peterborough, completely different class. JJ is the best of the permanents

Best Defender

Micky Hall, just for the way he marked Leon Fortune-West out of the game at Bishops Stortford, closely followed by Chris Moore and Billy for his free kicks and passing, Mark Keune and Dave Roser for coach journeys home from away games

Best Midfielder

Joe Baker for skill and talent, the Saint was a great player as well as Alan Dickens and Darren Southgate

Best Forward

Steve Jones, scored goals for fun, not forgetting Paul Battram, who will ever forget his goal at Bishops Stortford in the best game I have seen, Leon again for scoring goals.

I'm sure I have missed out loads of players, like Dave Root, Dave Cass, Craig Tucker, Jason Broom, Andy Howard, Andy McDonald, Mel Kelly, Paul Shirt, Kevin Rendell, Chris Payne, George Young for his game against Potton, everyone before the mid '80s, Eddie Duah

Can I throw in a few oldies from the 70's...head and shoulders ...literally! Steve Bone...then there was... Arthur Coughlan, Peter White, Freddie Claydon, Dave Wallace and finally, the incomparable Ronnie Hanley

We have a great history of goalkeepers: Barry Wilson, Steve girffiths, Paul Norris, Dave Cass, Rooty, Craig Tucker and even Flappy King were all heroes on regular occasions, but how come no-ones mentioned one of the best, Mark McCutcheon?

For my all time fave I would have to be torn between four of the obvious forwards: Clayden, Young, Jones or Baker , and would poss just give it to Jonah for his goals, loyalty and enthusiasm, as well as the credit he brought on the club after leaving for some rich Cockney club up the smoke...
