true attendances???

As we all know many non league clubs lie about their attendances,i can understand the reason for this as its easy to get sponsorship and programme advertising et cetera if you exaggerate the amount of people who come to your matches, probably the biggest fibbers in this scam were canvey island who used to double their actual crowd to pretend that they were well supported,Basildon United are probably the most honest in the ESL and they have posted single figure attendances this season but who are the least reluctant to give out their actual crowds?

to be honest i always thought it was the other way around because of the tax man. i.e. saying the gate was less so therefore paying less tax.

~Its the VAT on the gate receipts which you have to pay over, Income tax is only payable if you make a profit, So that rules out most teams then

The VAT-man would look at attendances and make sure it ties up with the revenue declared, taking into account oaps, kids, & comps

clubs get around that by using the 'kids for a quid' scheme, they can report a crowd of 800 and say that 500 of them were under 16,believe me jeff king was quite open about it at canvey, but when canvey played in the FA Cup they would state that there crowd was lower than it actually was because gate receipts are shared in cup competetions of course,i could tell you some stories about kingy, not a nice man.

I know most clubs do it. You only have to check the records for Cup matches against League games. The biggest flouter was Barnet under Stan Flashman....when they were pushing for a FL place back in the late 80s, a crowd of 2,500 for an ordinary league match, would be followed by one of 500 for an FA Cup or Trophy game...

Whenever I go to a ESL game I usually have a quick look round to try to estimste how many have turned up. I'm not usually far out when I compare the crowd as per Mitoo so I would say that the attendances are usually accurate. Tho' I tend to asume that once the game starts there are not very many still in the bar.... of which I hear that Barking are currently bereft.
