Team for Woking

Its an interesting subject. Ever since we were forced into changes with Hawkins sending off and Sachas arm we seem to have been trying to play with wing backs. The trouble is we really dont have any. Ricketts, Opinel and Hawkins are all full backs and probably happiest playing wide in a back four. Sacha is pobably the closest we have got to a wing back but playing Hawkins inside him allways worries me a) from a disciplinary perspective and B) I dont think they have a great understanding.

The reason I think we persist with playing 3 at the back is it gives us the best chance of winning a game by playing to our strengths. That is playing an attacking high tempo game based on speed, non stop effort and pressurising the opposition and with a good bit of skill thrown in. And thats whats been getting the results.

Playing 4 at the back may be OK if we let teams come onto us or played more of a long ball game with a big target man or were defending a 1 goal lead and a man down but generally with the players we have its not for us.

This does mean that Ricketts might struggle to find a place in the team in a wide position but if Quinn is injured he has done a good job in the past in the holding midfield role.

Just watch us play a back 4 tomorrow.

I have never subscribed to the 'don't change a winning team/formula' theory.

If you see a perceived weakness, then you do something to fix it.

I agree with Harry on this one. I feel that whilst 3-5-2 may help us to control the central areas, we are weak going forward as we do not have the outlet of the overlapping full back, and we are prone to attacks where the ball is switched quickly to the opposite flank

I also feel that it is best (where possible) for players to be put into their natural positions. To my mind Sacha and Ricketts are full backs with limited attacking capabilities whilst Joel and Keeling are wingers that are not at their most comfortable tracking back. The only one of the 'wing-backs' that we've used who appears comfortable doing both is Slatts.

However, this is only my opinion and I cannot argue with Liam using the tactics that have got us into a position that we could only dream about at the start of the season. Whatever team and formation he plays I will be there cheering on another victory in the push for the playoffs

There was certainly no reason to change while we were winning games and the first team was settled. Now, with players who have proved a revelation in this system (i.e. Slatter, Hawkins) missing, the benefits of 3-5-2 are less certain.

4-4-2, on paper, makes a lot more sense, simply because that way all players in the XI would be playing in their favoured positions - particularly given who's available and who isn't tomorrow. However, in practice, 3-5-2 has been effective. It's a difficult quandary.

For what it's worth, I think it is best to select your best team, then choose the formation that best suits that team.

Round pegs in round holes etc.

Much better than sticking to a rigid formation, then hoping the selected players will "fit" into their chosen spot, regardless of whether it is their best or preferred position.

As for tommorrow, I would go 4-4-2

Cronin

Ricketts Ross MaCarthy Opinel

Legister Long Quinn(if fit)or Coleman Keeling

Sodje MacDonald

Bench Mott Smudger Luke Purcell Varney

Bench would be Mott, Joel, Ricko, Luke and probably Alex Varney.

No Joel in the starting XI?
