Posst-Match Ananlyis Time

Recommended Posts

Well, that was certainly a game I will remember for a while, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. The performance was not too bad, and the fact that the Vics fans are saying how good we were on their site can only mean we played to a Conference standard (or they play to a Ryman one!) However, the officials did their upmost to ensure the trophy would stay in the Conference, and some of the decisions were truly awful.

The team looked good at the start of the game, but as it wore on so players started to stand out as average. I thought that this would be a game that Chris Duffy would be really fired up for being an ex-Vic, but he rarely seemed to come out of 1st gear. His delivery was poor, and his unwillingness to take on players cost us. However, the question can be asked whether a right footed player should be playing down the left wing? I could understand this should he perform brilliantly week in week out, but as he doesn't then maybe experimenting with Duffy's position could prove worth while.

Bertie Brayley came on against Heybridge on the right wing and played well, maybe he is the player that could have swapped roles with Duffy?

However, on the night Brayley was poor, and it seemed that the commitment that players like Jeff Minton and JK show was not evident. Bertie is such a skillful plaer, it's just a shame that he doesn't use this skill positively on a more regular basis.

Boylan and Greggors were kept quiet, a mixture of poor service and solid defending (at times) contributed to this. It is clear to see that they prepared for this game thoroughly, and they knew how to play the game before it began. Whether we had this same knowledge about them is up for debate.

Losing Jeff Minton was a huge blow, he really was coordinating the way the game was played from his central role. He gave 110% again last night, which in the end was why he was injured. Still, I'm sure he would have rather score a goal to equalise and get injured than never try at all.

Overall, we gave a good performance against a Conference team, but Canvey fans will look back and realise how much better we could have played. Still, hopefully Basingstoke will take the backlash from this result Tuesday night, and give the fans that travelled that distance on a Friday night to watch the team we all love something to cheer about!

UP THE YELLOWS!!!

I can't really comment much because I couldn't make the game but I wonder if 3 games in 6 days took its toll.

Somebody said on a previous thread that Greggors looked tired in a recent game and players like Boylan, Greggors, Minton, Wardy have been regular fixtures in the team this season. The last couple of games have not been played in the best of conditions(on very heavy pitches) so this obviously has an effect on players.

Let's hope the injuries to Prothers and Jeff are not too serious, with Benno suspended our midfield could be decimated for Tuesday night.

It's dissapointing to be out of the Trophy and maybe we could have played better but we were beaten by a Conference side in not the best of conditions.

Let's get behind the lads on Tuesday. We're only 7 points behind Aldershot so have everything to play for.

YELLOWS!!

Well just to echo what's in 'my' report! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

If Northwich play three up front, three at the back isn't going to contain them. Why was Benno playing at the back when (almost) everyone knows he's a class midfielder? If Benno was going to play in midfield why did Ross Johnson or Craig Davidson not come in for Cowan? Why did Duffy play on the right and not JK? Why did JK play in the middle? Why did Bertie Brayley play on the left and not Duffy or better still why did Bertie Brayley even turn up?! If Protheroe is still carrying his injury why did Parmenter not replace him? Our squad is big enough! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I can see why the Yellow Army were furious last night. After all these League wins the playbook went out the window against Northwich and players played out of position and players that were injured were playing and players that haven't seen football for months were left the witness our pathetic campaign from the stands!!

Hopefully Minton's injury isn't too serious and the contact I heard was just pad on pad!

So pabird, I saw you sitting at the back of the stand, perhaps you can tell us where it all went wrong? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I just hope Jeff has learned from last night's mistakes and returns the team to normal for League domination Tuesday against the 'Stoke we deserve to hammer these after our performance at their place back in August!!

Sorry I missed all the fun. I couldn't make it to the game as I had to be in Cambridge on a course all day Friday. What with the dreadful traffic conditions, I'm still stuck on the M11 so need to get a message to work that I probably won't be in on Monday either. Luckily a Stella Artois tanker is stuck alongside me and I'm getting quite pally with the driver.

Great match report Matt.

I was going to add this to my report below my ratings, but I thought it would be easier to do it on here. It's the line-up I would've put out, using largely the players that did play and I thought shouldn't have played last night. Also taking into account that Northwich play 3-4-3...

Formation 4-4-2

Potter

Ward Chenery Johnson Davidson

Kennedy Bennett Minton Duffy

N. Gregory Boylan

SUBS:

Parmenter

Forbes

Brayley

Dobinson

Harrison

Anyone want to agree/disagree?

BTW - Merv, Mark phoned he's got a burst pipe! Asked if you want to take a look at it for him!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Was'nt at the game but can only echo thoughts about our strange team formation on the match report. Bennett should not have played at the back. Duffy should be on the left, with JK on the right.Parmenter instead of Brayley.I though all this was all sorted out now but I wonder why our thoughts were so different to Jeff's. Stupid, but I wonder if the time had come to make a decision, the trophy or conf. I'm not really fussed about the trophy as we have been there done that and now hopefully we can fully concentrate on the league, which we have be doing recently.

Totally agree with your selection Matthew.

If fit I would like to see Prothers at right back in a 4-4-2 formation. In several of the pre season friendlies he played in a wide position and if he is allowed to get forward and link up with J.K, his crossing from out wide is absolutely lethal.

We all know his ability from dead ball situations but he is also a fine crosser of a ball. Something we have lacked this season has been decent deliveries from the flanks. I think if Prothers was played at right back and allowed to get forward, the service he would provide Greggors and Boylan would be excellent.

P.S

Just seen a rather irritating message on the shout box from anonymous (ricay supporter) saying Northwich 2 Scum Island 1 ha ha!

I've only three words to say to that rather sad individual:

HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I rest my case!!

Matthew when responding you understand I walk on glass only when the passion felt is in a negative mode

So from the helicopter view what was so difficult to understand was the patten of playing several individuals out of position but stranger perhaps leaving them in un-natural positions when well into the game they were so ineffective

Duffers is that rare individual a right sided person who is best effective on the left, He works hard on the right but a loss of his natural aggression is obvious

Benno at CH got in the way of Chenners to such an extent that Chenners looked better going forward, Benno is a natural mid-fielder (my opinion) Chenners is a natural CH (not LCH)

The gold medal winner in capitol letters was JOHN KENNADY who stepped forward and accepted so much more responsibility when Jeff had to go off

We have more talent at mid-field than any other Rmn Premier team and (I promise) after much thought I would have gone with JK at RWB Chenners and Johnson at CHs and Crow at LWB

Why

JK is the only natural wing back in the squad and we gain full use of his talents there minus the over streching for tackles that gains him his yellow cards

Crow creates more from the LWB than others besides being a very experienced player in that position, he is also two footed and a natural covering player across the back

Like the rest of the fans I love Wardy to death but he needs to regroup and could prosper from a brief rest

To use the players we used on Friday then Duffers on the LMF Proths in the hole in front of the defence Jeff supporting wide and forward players

I would settle for any reasonable mix right even Wardy and JK and the forwards speak for themselves

The opposition had a game plan they stuck to we had the better skilled players

I do not have a degree in the bloody obvious and have stated most of my thoughts previously and certainly prior to Friday

Matthew I am 99% fan but you know the management do have a superb record and I think one of those pieces of glass just got through my shoe

Well sorry Guys - I travelled a very long way to see a game of 2 halves.

Surely Refs and Linesman have to come up to a certain standard to take charge of games like this. It would appear that none of them actually had a clue of the rules ?

I thought on the whole we played well - although I can only presume that by the formation and position of the players, dare I say - we did not go there to win. When something is going well as it has been in the league - why change it / experiment. Especially in a game of this nature. All I can think of is that Jeff and co. wish to concentrate on the league, and that is there choice. I will not knock them for this as the Club would not be enjoying the success it has over the last few seasons without them.

On a final note, one player stood out for me, Mr Brayley - I know he has skill and I know he wants to win, He IS NOT a worldclass player, so why why why, time and time again does he try fancy tricks rather than the BLOODY OBVIOUS ball that creates a chance for the TEAM !!!

You play in a TEAM - As part of a TEAM- wake up and smell the roses Mr Brayley.

Anyway - enough said. Can't make Basingstoke so have a good time, roll on Saturday.

I think Mr Brayley has learnt a few too many tricks from a certain Joey Cole!

Flicks and tricks are all well and good if its going to profit the team but half the time I think Bertie is playing on his own.

It was like when you played football as a kid and there was always one boy who would never pass the ball. He would try and take the opposition on, on his own, or try shooting instead of passing to a better placed teammate. This is just like Bertie.

Don't get me wrong I think Bertie is a really skilful and exciting player and plays with plenty of passion, but he has to understand it's a team game. If he can learn to not be so selfish and develop better awareness of players around him, he'll be some player.

Maybe he's picked up some bad habits from West Ham. They're not exactly playing as a team at the moment.

If Bertie Brayley was even half as good as Joe Cole I think it would make him worse!! I reckon he just might have the wrong attitude at the minute - another Wayne Vaughan no-one needs!!! If someone gave him a good rollocking about how to be a member of the team, then I hope he'll mature into a useful member of our squad.

For me Bertie has tremendous skill ... he thrives on support from the Yellow Army. For Gods sake, let's give him a boost if he plays tonight (not like some of the vibes on Friday night). He can turn a game on its head. He might just thrive on a full game, instead of being the proverbial sub.

All together now .. There's only 1 Bertie Brayley ... 1 Bertie Brayley !!

It's all part of the problem of having such a big squad. You have the luxury of trying a player out but if he doesn't play the game you want, you replace him next time around. However, there lies the weakness; you rarely get a chance to settle the squad and all the changes, week in and week out, have a detrimental effect on the team as a whole. Clubs who have a small squad are forced to give second chances to players who are not magic on their first or second appearance. Gradually they settle into the side and their game often improves.

Perhaps that explains why some players leave us and settle into a new club and do extremely well. Conversely, some players have done well elsewhere, but have done very little when they have come to us.

Perhaps having a massive squad is as bad as having a small squad?

There is not have a single player in the squad who does not have a proven record at this and maybe higher levels of the game

The problem when they become fringe players is that when selected or put-on as a sub it becomes another new begining and some react by over trying

In the case of BB I feel for the lad as in my own mind this is a CF not a wide player

In the first half on Friday he did make progress down the line and and supply good crosses on several occasions

In the second half he looked lost as the opposition at every opportunity attacked our three at the back with long ball into the corners pulling our back three apart with Bertie being required to play deeper than in the first half

He also failed to gain any support from the ref when the 12 year old playing opposite Bertie fell to the floor as if shot when ever Bertie approached

I think another problem Friday night was that during the second half, Chenners was doing some blinding runs from the back but when he got to the half-way line he couldn't do anything with it. Bertie was on the touch-line to his left, but there was a Vics player between them, so Chenners could only do the same thing time and time again by launching the ball up through the centre, sometimes it paid off with Parms & Gregors having near misses, but other times it was just knocked straight back out again by the Vics' back three.

When Chenners was bringing the ball, I feel that Bertie should've been more forward on the left and screaming out for it. Then Chenners could've hooked the ball into the path of Bertie his pace would've beaten his marker and he would've been able to get in some dangerous crosses.

But sadly this was not to be and one of our more effective offences couldn't come into play. Still we can gain some silverware with the Bryco Cup and if we win it, I think we're garenteed a friendly with the winners of the Premier Division for the Charity Shield in pre-season - we could end up playing ourselves!!!
