The A2 dual carriageway was closed in both directions

A gas leak has led to the closure of a major rush hour route and severe traffic congestion.

Kent Police said gas engineers were working to repair the leak between Gravesend East and Northfleet and emergency services were at the scene.

 

The A2 was closed in both directions at the A227 junction after the leak was reported at about 1700 GMT on Tuesday and people warned to avoid the area.

 

Police said it was thought roadwork contractors had damaged a standpipe.

 

Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes, including the M20 and M25, if travelling between London and the coast.

 

Engineers from the Southern Gas Networks are dealing with the incident.
