Nigeria v Ghana Tonight at Brentford

Recommended Posts

incidentally given the result of this game wathced by anything between 6500 and 13 million people (depending on who you listen to and believe) it would appear that Nigeria require the services of Charltons former cheif bottle washer as soon as possible.

Lato - You come home from work, albeit at different times now, and are straight on here causing mayhem, haven't you heard of the term 'chief cook and bottle washer' before. It means that an individual, in this case 'the great one' is a one man band and does everything, that's apparently what he was doing at the Valley to keep their Youth Academy on the rails.

of course I've heard of it...unlike you and ironing or irony!

3praise - Yet another strange post and I really can't make you out, you say Clement was like a square peg in a round hole at Coles Park however deep down I know you know full well he is the Real McCoy but are just afraid to admit to it on here incase your lord and master finds out through John Bacon who goes through each and every post with a fine tooth comb and reports back. You would then be for the high jump in 'the last king of Scotland' fashion.

rhodes, seeing as i am not employed by haringey boro' my feelings and opinions are none but my own.

having been coached by Mr Temile i have stated previously that i was not impressed by the man coming to training in an old 1980's nigerian shell suit, trying to educate me about his playing days rather then push me to be a better player, which i found to be quite big headed (very unmessiah like). And it was a glorious day for the club when he was sacked/he left, as it left the gate open for coaches to come in and do a better job.

Rhodes i think you know as well as i do that Clement is not as good as you say but are afraid to say incase somone tells him and you loose your best and probably only friend.

Rhodes what happened to your support on here namely wingman, Saf06 etc? did they jump ship when they found out you never had a ground to water?

I find it incredible that you should say that about 'the great one', it was a special day for Haringey when Clement walked through the 'gates of heaven', as I called it then, but the Club simply didn't appreciate or realise what they had under their very noses and ended up killing the goose that laid the golden egg because of the appalling way they treated him, showing him no respect. Anyway he left of his own accord when I invited him onboard at Kentish Town after making a 300 mile round trip to Lilleshall with our Chairman one night to secure his services and get him to sign on the dotted line, shall I just say that he didn't take very much persuading. As for Saf06 and Wingman I wouldn't know why they don't come on here anymore, they're possibly more than happy for me to be spokeperson for the Club and have other fish to fry.

3praise - There you go again jumping to conclusions, I have lots of friends as I'm a very sociable well liked individual. Incidentally have you ever encountered a Coach called Jose Fernandez in your time at Coles Park, he was another shining example of someone treated appallingly by the Club and was never allowed to reach his true potential, doesn't that go someway to telling you why there is never any progress both on and off the hallowed turf. Fernandez was my right hand man when it came to Community issues and raising the Club's profile and could charm the birds from the trees as well as sell sand to the Arabs, the ideal person in other words to have onboard but guess what
'Sugar' showed him the door, funny that!

great thread....

however, some myths about the tremendous occasion at Griffin park..

The crowd was around 9,000 (1,500 above the official atendance, due to the amazing number of "press", "comps" and "concessions"

Therefore Brentford didnt make as much money from the game, as you may think...the official figure records paying tickets.

The night was a late and noisy one, as the Nigerians turned up about 20 minutes before KO...! The streets and pubs were well busy before the game....doing good business..and selling out of many types of beer

The pitch invasions (4 or 5 !) were fun filled ones and not with any malice or menace..as opposed to some normal pitch invasions seen at English grounds...

still, thanks Rhodes for an entertaining thread !

Greg Dyke - One question if I may, were you actually present on the night.

No,

I was at a pub quiz, but I had friends giving me updates from a local pub....

It was a Tuesday I think...

Here are some thoughts from 2 Brentford fans......

i walked past braemar road gates at 8;20pm and it was mayhem. people could not get in the ground. there was loads of traffic on ealing road to. ealing road you could not move down there. they seemed in good spirit. dancing and blowing therwe whistles. apparently the nigeria team did not arrive til 7;45 the game had not even started @ 8;30.

I was at the game also I just want to say this, it was a great night. The fans were milling around from 4pm and rattling the pub doors for us to open early. They were all immacutely behaved even if there was pandomonium at the box office.

That is because there were a lot of fans who just could not get in for different reasons, unwilling to pay ticket price, unable to afford the same, chancers, bogey press passes. etc. The atmosphere was never ugly and the crowd must have been 8000 plus The food was proper spicy, fantastic, the football was very fast, technically sound but tactically naive at times. The singing was excellent, the music typical vibrant African ryhthmns and all in all a very enjoyable night crowd invasions or not.

Also get this at any given opportunity a fan either Ghanaian or Nigerian would run the length of the stand housing the opposing fans waving a flag of his own country in their faces..excellent..can you imagine that happening on Saturday? Fans doing rolly pollies in the goal mouth..superb!

One f**cking steward though chases one fan from 8000 across the pitch over the railings and up the New Road steps and escorts him out of the ground. Pathetic individual with no grasp of the sense of carnival that engulfed Griffin Park.

The Princess Royal had a top night and we were particularly selling quadruple and triple shorts of vodka, brandy, JD, whisky, gin and Rum with Guinness and Stella chasers. More of that Saturday please lads.

Every one of the 70 customers left with no hassle, politely, quietly ish and before the twenty minutes drinking up time elapsed.

The Moose on Talk Sport said it was a memorable and surreal experience

Going by the above I thought you were there. I was and the attendance may well have been 9,000 however there was at least 13,000 crammed into the ground with almost as many locked outside. I was there an hour before kick off and couldn't actually get down Braemer Road as it was a sea of people, I had arranged to meet 'the great one' on the corner by the souvenier shop and we then proceeded down Braemer Road, it was only then that I realised I was in the company of true greatness as people were falling at his feet and it was like the film The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston playing Moses as the sea of people instantly parted including the Ghana fans who seemed to recognise him. Once inside the stadium I doubt whether 'the great one' saw more than five minutes of the game as everyone wanted a piece of him, I have to say the whole experience was totally sureal and I have never witnessed anything quite like it in well over 40 years of watching football.

If my memory serves me correctly,...wasnt the Ealing road end closed at the time (to the right, if you are in the Braemar Road stand)

If it was open, then 12,200 would be the maximum possible, unless it was 2 to a seat in the New Road stand !

I think 9,000 would be nearer the mark, which is a pretty good attendance, considering the price and weather...

What do you mean 'the weather', it was a balmy evening. I still maintain the crowd was five figures and close to 13,000, it was certainly capacity.
