THE SENIOR CUP

HORNCHURCH 3 - 0 GRAYS ATHLETIC

Semi Final

Christmas may have finished over a month ago but "Jesus" was centre stage at AFC Hornchurch last night as the Urchins sealed their place in the Senior Cup Final.

Match action from Hornchurch v Grays Athletic

Simon Parker got his biblical nickname from the Bridge Avenue faithful after starting the season with long hair and a beard and the striker's deft chip on 79 minutes, following great work from Mark Janney, sent the Ryman Division One North leaders through to the Final at Southend United's Roots Hall.

Parker's strike came just 60 seconds after Kris Lee's ferocious turn and shot sizzled past the out-stretched hands of keeper, Danny Knowles, and knocked the wind out of Justin Edinburgh's Conference outfit.

Ronnie Hanley, assistant to Urchins boss, Colin McBride, was ecstatic to reach another final: "I was with Colin when Thurrock won the Senior Cup twice in a row so it's fantastic to get there again as this is a great little club.

"We probably won the game in the first 20 minutes as Grays started like a freight train and threw everything at us. We were gasping for air but there's a lot of heart in that team and it showed tonight."

Grays had dominated the opening period with Aaron O'Connor and Dave Wareham both going close before Hornchurch's Ronnie Fletcher opened the scoring when he headed home a corner at the far post on 27 minutes.

While AFC Hornchurch can look forward to a final appearance against either Aveley or Great Wakering Rovers, Justin Edinburgh was left contemplating changes to his squad: "The team's attitude wasn't correct and we can have no complaints about the result.

"We had a mix of experience and youth out there and they've all been around the first team long enough to know what's expected so there's no excuses and I'll be looking to bring in some new faces," said the ex-Spurs defender.

Grays' semi final nightmare wasn't the only disaster of the day with former Dagenham & Redbridge and Hornchurch manager, Garry Hill, agreeing to join as Director of Football before pulling out of the deal just hours later.

I seem to recall Dagenham & Redbridge were beaten about 5-0 that day....

6-1 that night and Neville Southall played in goal for Dagenham.

Fantastic night. One I will remember for a long time. All you mugs that went to West Ham..ha.ha!! Fair play to the Grays supporters, that turned up, they took defeat well I thought. There side, YES I KNOW IT WASN'T THEIR FIRST X1, looked a quality side still but lacked something up-front (IMO).

Proud to be an Urchin...roll on the Final.

Bodkin looked good for Grays. Some decent approach play but the final ball just wasn't there from Grays. Hx were far more ruthless in front of goal.
