Gravesend V Halifax - the replay game

The very same thing happened back in the 1800's. Villa won the league and Wednesday got relegated. The ironic (this story is full of irony) thing being Sheffield Wednesday beat Aston Villa 4-1 at Owlerton, now Hilsbrough. The match was played in November of the season in question, I think it was 1898-1899, but was abandoned after 78 minutes for one reason or another. Something makes me think that it's possibly floodlight failure but did they have floodlight's back then? Anyway the game was called off with 12 minutes left to play with Wednesday 3-1 up.

The FA, seemingly more penickity back then than they are now, ordered Villa to travel to Sheffield in March to play out the final 12 minutes, the only problem being that the man who scored Villa's goal, his name slips my mind, transfered to another club. The match was his only game for the Villa so I imagine he may be some sort of cult hero up there. Villa obviously thought this to be unfair so, I don't know if they appealed but the FA let them play someone else instead. This is, to my knowledge, the first example of a substitute being used and would be interested if anyone knew any different. In the final 12 minutes Wednesday scored again and made the game 4-1.

Bloody hell....thought I was the only saddo to know such things ?

The original game was played on Nov 28th 1898 but was halted due to failing light. As Harry says, the remaining 10 & a half minutes were completed on 13 March 1899. Ironically, Villa won the League Championship and Wednesday got relegated that season( cheers !).

Oh, and the game was played at Olive Grove ( which was their ground pre Owlerton/Hillsborough ).

A total of 29 players took part in the fixture !!

Cheers,

Aha, smile . I knew it had something to do with failing lights but couldn't remember what.

Can anyone confirm this, in our local paper your manager was qouted as saying your groundsman had "GONE HOME" before half time if so why?

Rain was predicted and he went home! The story has since been pulled and i think that is cos Halifax fans would of kicked off.

"Kicked Off?" Behave. Have you seen our halfway liners? I wouldn't mess with them.

Our local papers come out on a thursday, and while I didn't see the groundsman at this perticular time on this day I do often see him at around this time so it is rather unusual for him to have gone. Having said that I did say unusual, not impossible. He may have been unwell, he may have had family trouble, he may have even forgot to record the Simpsons what ever the reason is then if he had have gone home THEN IT WOULDN'T HAVE MADE THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF DIFFERENCE AS THE RAIN WAS TOO MUCH FOR THE PITCH SO GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON.

It's a fair cop guv....I did it....me & the Fat B'stards kidnapped the Groundsman and while we held him hostage in The Plough, one of our gang known as Freddie Four Candles hid his fork so there was no way he would be able to shift 20k gallons of water off of the pitch. I also had a quick word, Canute like, with the water table & told it not to rise & therefore assist with the drainage.

The Lord works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform !......or did the ref just look like a man of the cloth ?

I'll try & arrange a plague of locusts to be on standby for the next game so that they can eat the grass if we start losing.

The Groundsman was on that pitch until the kick off, sorting it out. The rain came down during half time when the pitch was playable, but then flooded. What could the groundsman have done anyway? He could not have sorted out, or gone round, the pitch in 10 mins. It would not have made a difference.

No you couldn't have, we won the toss and kicked off first. And also, are any off you registered to play football for the club? Probably not so please let this topic rest, forking the pitch when it's raining wouldn't have done anything, because the water that may've drained away would just be replaced by rain water!

Michael Fish was quoted as saying " it's not a bad forking pitch"

Freddie Four Candles was quoted as saying, upon his arrest for the alledged kidnapping of the Groundsman that "it was a good pitching fork"

My opinion on it all ? I couldn't give a fork !
