Town 4- 1 Ilford

Barney

Recommended Posts

John, Allen, Campbell, Bastian, Tickner, Allen (200th game for town), Magona, Smith, Hall, Nyman, Hammatt, Negus, Watson, Hunt, Ofori, Jones, Carroll.

Well Town started positively and won a clear penalty after Lee Smith was brought down in the box on 4 minutes. Rudi Hall stepped up and nailed it. 1 – 0. At this point Town were outclassing Ilford so that being the case what do we do yes you’ve guessed sit back and let Ilford come at us. Ilford then missed a sitter of a goal. Finally on 20 minutes old “Offside” Clarkee sneaked through the defence before the ball was played the flag stayed down and scored 1 – 1. Souper Kevin Riley (Captain) was booked.

At the end of the first half it would be fair to say Town fans were not impressed.

Second half Dean Nyman picked up the ball deep and got to the by-line. Paul Campbell shot over a shot that looked easier to score. Finally after some superb pinpoint passing Bryan Hammatt was brought down on the edge of the box. Rudi Hall stepped up with the Freekick and with great aplomb beat Sam Long in goal even though he got both hands to the shot 2- 1 - the venom carried the ball in. Lee Smith and Matty Negus off and Andy Jones and Kojo Ofori on. Kojo dances down the wing and crosses gifting Dean Nyman the simplest of tap ins. 3 – 1. At last Ilford were dead and buried. Finally Bryan Hammatt gets a fourth with a shot from 25 – 30 yards out that Didier Drogba or Frank Lampard would have been proud to own. 4 – 1. Paul Campbell off and Ronnie Watson off.

4 – 1 but if we had got our act together in the first half it could have been a cricket score.

From my vantage point at the far end of the ground, I was able to witness some slick passing of the ball which culminated in a very much improved second half performance.

I am aware that Ilford were not the best team we have played this season, but they did try their best to get something from their visit to the Brimmobeau.

It was always on the cards that Danny Clarke would score, but there appeared to be a new found team effort. High balls down the field to our giant forwards disappeared. Balls to feet, movement off the ball, and Kojo frightening the life out of their right back reminded me of the good 'old days'.

Most amusing part of the second half was when Kojo kicked the ball out so that his injured team mate could receive attention. What does the lino' do? Tell him to go and get the ball!

It is Christmas!

Brilliant stuff, yes.
Well played, not for 65 mins it certainly was not.

One thing that did come out of today's game for me was that Andy Jones MUST start the boxing day game, he looked strong on the ball, good delivery of passes & as soon as he got the ball his head was up & looking around, only seen two sub appearences by him but he looks the part.

Funniest thing of the day has to be the sight of Soooopa Kev telling the Ilford keeper, before Rudi took the pen, to go to his right!!
How many games did he play for The Town?

Andy Jones - 50 yard cross field ball straight to a team mate's feet! Wow!

Reminds me of Gazza's golf!

Glad you spotted that from the other end of the pitch as well, anybody else impressed with his efforts so far?

50 yard golf shot? you talking about my putting again?

No. The short 3rd at Melbourne! Mind you, I seem to remember you taking just the 4 off the tee!

I hate that hole! 4 of the sweetest 5 iron shots you could ever see......stupid place to put a hedge though anyway!

Hang on a minute Tiger, how many shots was it the last time we played the 9th at Hobbs Cross?
Let me help with a reminder....you had to take your socks off to keep count!

I thought the scoreline was a little flattering, to be honest. Gazza got it right - for the first 65 minutes or so we did not click. At all. But goals 2 through 4 came during a 15 minute burst when we played some really good stuff.

Mind you, quite how Paul Campbell missed when it was still 1-1 I still don't know!! It could only have been about 3 yards out, directly in front of goal :-0

Also agree that Jones looked very good for the short time he was on the pitch - a significant improvement on Mackie. Smith needs games under his belt still and looked understandably disappointed when he was hauled off - I don't think he's played in the same position twice this year!! I wasn't convinced by Dean Nyman up front with Hammatt - in fact I think Smith would have been better in that role (in Crace's enforced absence) - but I can't argue with 2 goals in 2 games. Rudi's free kick was top quality.

We will need to play better if we are to take maximum points over the Xmas / New Year break. Especially next Saturday against Enfield. We really need to attack in that game.

A final word for the incomparable Super Kev. I thought he was Ilford's best player by a distance, showing the commitment he demonstrated during his spell(s) at the Town and no doubt all his other clubs too. He is just the type of player Ilford need right now - loyal and a leader. I have nothing but admiration for him.

One player does not make a team and Super Kev can't carry them forever. I think he was hoping Jim would notice him!

First thing that Kevin said to me when we were clearing up after the game was, 'Hi, how are you doing?' Quality bloke.

After we scored the early penalty,Town were dire up until half time.Second half started better, but we continued to be wastfull against a very average team with probably the worst keeper i've seen at this level.

The team badly missed Crace and velandia.Rudi scored a good penalty and an excellent free kick, but was anonamous otherwise.Dave Allen continued his great form with another top display.Tickener is settling in more with every game, athough he can still look vunerable to fast players running at him when he gets pulled out wide).Bastian has put in quiet but solid performances as he regaines full fitness.Campell was quiet yesterday. He needs to up his consistancy a bit. A great performance at present,is currently being followed by an anonamous one.

Matty and Smithy had an OK game.Magona gave a committed perfomance, but was somewhat cancelled out by Riley.Nyman played well although i'm not convinced a partnership beween himself and Hammett would be fruitfull in the longterm. What with Crace and Braithwaite ready to comeback,Dean may well be better competing for a wide midfield position.Hammett played fairly well.He cancelled out some stray lay-offs with some decent hold up play.Nice interchange with Kojo for Nymans goal and an excellent long range goal near the end.

For me Jones' wayward cross cancelled out his lovely cross field pass, but overall he looked quite impressive.Kojo is an ideal super-sub and run rings around the tiring Ilford defence.

Although he was not on the park for long, I was very impressed with Andy Jones. He made himself time to look up and a couple of his runs at Ilford defence were good.

It would be interesting to see how he could perform from the start of a game.

Regarding Braithwaite, when is he going to be fit enough to at least start on the bench ?

Anyone know ?

As others have stated on here, poor first half allowing Ilford "back into the game" but a much better tempo and flow to the game second half. Could and should have had seven or eight.

Why oh why, do we not play football on the deck more.

Second half yesterday proved it works !!

Merry Christmas to All.
