Positioning of Linesmen

Recommended Posts

I sure that in the good old days before they got called assistant referees, that linesmen ran the same half of the pitch for the whole match, so that if one of them was particularly incompetent then both sides would suffer equally.

Nowdays they seem to change ends with the side which means that you have to suffer the same official for the whole game.

Now regardless of whether I think that last night's linesman was a special friend of Sodje or not, I do feel that the old system was much fairer to everyone and should not have been changed.

Any qualified refs care to comment

Will a former ref do?

As far as I know there is now hard and fast rule.

It is entirely up to the referee where he places his linesmen, usually one is more senior than the other so that in case of injury to the referee the senior 'line' can take over. It also used to follow that the senior linesman would run the line closest to the dug outs.

Hope this helps.

Yes that 'Russian' linesman was perfectly positioned to see the ball had crossed the line, a bit later there was a perfect example of why you should always play to the whistle. A ball came over the Stevenage defence and he correctly flagged Liam H offside, what he hadn't seen was Rob Owen making a run from deep and unfortunatly when Rob saw the flag go up he stopped if he'd carried on he would've been in a great position because the ref, who I thought had a good game, had seen exactly what happened overuled the lino and waved play on so always play to the whistle!!! That other lino was the prettiest one I've ever seen, I wouldn't mind sharing a changing room with her!

Either you were standing a long way away from her or you have bloody awful eyesight.

Why have you seen a prettier linesman at Stonebridge Road ever?
