Burnham Ramblers 3,

Wroxham 1

FA Carlsberg Vase Third Round

Saturday 16th December 2006

Referee : Dave Woolford (Salisbury)

Attendance : 99

On a soft but perfectly playable surface the game got off to a lively opening in front of a sparse crowd. Wroxham were first to show as Lemmon found Thompson but his cross went out of play, then at the other end Wall's cross landed on the top of Woodcocks net.

The referee didn't take long to reach for his cards, harshly cautioning Wornham for failing to retreat at a free kick. The Yachtsmen continued to hold the upper hand and Lemmon and White combined to set up Key and he got his shot in but the ball fizzed wide, then a poor clearance by McCartney gifted the ball to Key but his shot lacked any power.

Burnham were coming into the game more, but Woodcock was seeing little of the ball and when Lemmon's cross found White he got his shot in but the effort was blocked, then Lemmon crossed well but Key was penalised for his challenge in the area. Soon after Key broke into the box again and he fell to the ground with Cross but the referee waved play on.

By now there wasn't too much to choose between the sides, but frequent stoppages from the fussy match official meant that the game was not flowing. Key did well to tee up Howlett and his well struck shot saw McCartney get down well to save, then a handball by Baker provided Lemmon with a shooting opportunity but his effort hit the wall with the ball going off for a corner that was taken by Key and Challen won the header but his effort went wide.

A quickly taken Burnham free kick saw Carus foul Portway, but Baker's effort hit the Wroxham wall. Wroxham broke quickly and White found Lemmon who carried the ball forward before finding Howlett who again hit the target but the effort was saved, then at the other end Ansell got in but Woodcock stood up well to keep the effort out.

Wroxham got the opening goal of the game shortly before the break as Key but inside onto his right foot before shooting and although McCartney saved well he failed to hang on to the ball and Danny White pounced to roll the ball home to send his side in at the break a goal to the good.

HT : Burnham Ramblers 0, Wroxham 1

Wroxham made a good start to the second half as they took advantage of the good playing surface by stroking the ball around. However with 10 minutes of the half gone the home side pulled level in highly controversial circumstances. As Carus headed the ball back to Woodcock he and Ansell then fell to the ground and to the amazement of everybody in the ground the referee pointed to the penalty spot. After the protests had died down Gary Ansell powerful shot gave Woodcock no chance.

Wroxham responded well to the set back and they were soon on the attack again and White found Howlett who clipped a lovely ball to Lemmon and his header across the box led to a scramble before the ball was eventually cleared. By now it was all Wroxham and Gilmore played a lovely ball to Key and his well struck effort flicked off a defender for a corner. Lemmon crossed the ball and Miller headed back across the goal to Key who somehow diverted his header from a yard onto the bar.

More good work by Gilmore saw him drive a low cross into the box that was spilled by McCartney but nobody was on hand to turn the ball home. Key spread the ball wide to Gilmore and he again drove a low cross into the area and this time the ball flew all the way across the goal area and out of play. The first bad challenge of the afternoon saw Ansell go over the top on Howlett, but the referee let play continue with the Wroxham man lying prone on the ground.

Attention soon focussed on the match official again as Burnham attempted to make a substitution but for some reason the referee wouldn't let them despite Wall running off in anticipation of being replaced!

Wroxham continued to dominate and Thompson surged forward before being brought to the ground by Heffer with the referee deciding the offence had taken place just a couple of inches outside the penalty area with Lemmon's free kick being cleared. Gilmore was enjoying an excellent half and he cut inside onto his right foot before shooting and McCartney saved well. With time expiring Burnham took the lead against the run of play as they broke from the back and Dale's deep cross was met by a tremendous far post volley by Steve Portway who drove the ball back across Woodcock.

Wroxham threw everything forward in a desperate attempt to get back in the game and as Burnham broke they put the seal on the win as Jack Callow comfortably beat Woodcock in a raise to the ball before passing it into the empty net to book his side's place in the next round.
