Haha I love this forum, I don't think the term 'sit on the fence' exists. Whilst I'm well and truly on Kev's side here, can we not just agree to settle on the middle ground, which is...
-The drum is usually a great generator of a positive atmosphere
-The team can be lifted by this good atmosphere, amongst other things
-The team's attitude and performance can be affected by the atmosphere in the ground
-The drum does NOT guarantee a better performance but it encourages it
-You do not NEED a drum to create an uplifting atmosphere
-However, a drum present HELPS to build the atmpshere up!
I challenge you to pick holes in that!

You missed out several full stops!!!! go out would you and don't come back until you find actual holes!!

Here's one for you then:-

Why do most teams have a better home record than away ?

Is it the way the groundsman cuts the grass ?

Are the home changing rooms better ?

Do the away team suffer from travel sickness ?

or maybe, does the home crowd and atmosphere have a bearing on this ?

Discuss......

Cheers,

Calm down, we're all entitled to an opinion.
Half of us believe this is partially the reason why the Fleet came out confident in the second half.

half and partially are the operative words in this statement kev.

Liam: "go out there play the same, but listen for the drum, if its there, score some goals. but dont let any in"

Team: "YEAH"

i think, not.

Of course it's not! That's just stupid.

You started it???

I'm sorry, but it would not have started if these terms (in bold) had been used:

Secondly, I do stand away from the drum so I can't hear it, but the trouble is why should so many supporters have to avoid standing in the drum playing idiot's vicinity just so a minority can 'enjoy' watching a game of football?

Lastly, it you need to physically abuse a musical instrument just to enjoy yourselves and create an 'atmosphere' then I am sorry you must be somekind of sad individual!

I know different people have different views on watching a football match, some like singing along, some don't. I'm not critical of that, I have respect for all Fleet fans, but I do not like terms, such as the above, being used towards people, such as myself and my all my mates who stand with the drum.

and the drum

Havant & Waterlooville have an impressive home record and yet they don't allow musical instruments in their ground.
So, most of the reasons given in this thread for sides getting better results at home rather than away may have some validity but not the drum.
I have no quibble with people banging the drum, not the way I choose to support the team but each to their own, but If you guys genuinely believe that the comeback against Exeter had anything at all to do with the drum then I am afraid you will have to accept responsibilty for all the matches that we haven't won.

Not many people are acknowledging that this matter is NOT black or white! As I said in my poorly punctuated post, the drum CAN build a positive atmosphere. This atmosphere MAY HELP the team to raise their game.

There is not a direct correlation/scientific formula etc. to prove this- by no means will the banging of the drum for 90 minutes ensure we win the game. As I said, it's not black and white. However, the banging of the drum for 90 minutes could well create a better atmosphere for the players to play in, and this better atmosphere could well result in a better, more committed performance!

Ah, but in those games the drum isn't used as much. As has already been noted:

This is perhaps true, but it is very rare that the drum urges the team on. If we go down, people don't sing because they're unhappy. I'd argue that the team urges the drum on more than the other way round. If we're 1-0 up, it may urge the team on to get more goals, but at 1 or 2 goals down the crowd is silent. If noise is seen as a way to urge the team on, surely the best time to utilise it is in adversity?

I got you KShep. But there's not much room for grey on this forum... it's black or it's white...
