Havant & Waterlooville - IMPORTANT

Fleetbabe

Recommended Posts

Okay, okay................perhaps idiot was a bit strong?

What I was criticizing was whether we need the drum in the first place.

Those that seem to congregate with the drummer are never slow in throwing criticisms at those that chose to support the 'Fleet verbally and without the need to play musical instruments. So just perhaps they should be a little more thick-skinned when someone choses to criticize them?

There is a place for banging the hell out of a drum, or blowing on a trumpet for that matter. I believe a sports stadium is not one of them. For that reason I applaud the stand being made by Havant & Waterlooville FC and also the cricket grounds in Australia. I look forward, hopefully at some point in the very near future, for some one to see sense at Stonebridge Road and introduce a ban on musical instruments also.

The idea that someone banging on a drum can create some sort of special atmosphere and "drive the players forward" is laughable.

You are correct in your definition of a loyal supporter, Harry.
Queserasaha/wvn, like me, has been supporting Fleet since the 1960's. Like me, probably nearing 1000 appearances.
It's not a competition to see who is the best, most loyal or loudest fan, we just like the Fleet and are entitled to grumble when things go wrong.
I believe queserasaha has not made any serious criticisms so far this year, apart from his dislike of the drum.

Many thanks for your kind words of support CG.

Yes, you are right I have made very few, if any, criticisms this year.

This is the fundamental disagreement then! I think that the drum encourages the crowd to get involved with chants, clapping etc, which then carries onto the pitch. The players hear this support and feel spurred on, and there are times when that is evident. Take for example, in games when the crowd are in good voice for the majority of the game, we get the goal for a 1-0 win, and because the team have felt that the crowd have got behind them and lifted them, they'll celebrate with the crowd! Players, coaches, managers have all said it before and they'll say it again. You might ask why a drum is needed to get the crowd involved, but the proof is there on Saturdays- more people get involved when the drum is used. More people sing, people sing more enthusiastically, people sing for longer, with the drum going.

Quite right. So, in that case, why do those standing by the drum sing 'no noise from the halfway line' at some stage every home match?

Couldn't agree more, Harry - apart from the spelling, of course.

Each to his own though, as those 'pro-drum' individuals have quite correctly been implying.

Quecerasaha, how many matches have you been to this season? Not as many as the drummer has, I can tell you! Proves the drummer has more than loyal support for the club.

I've avoided commenting on this until now but can I ask what travelling around the country has to do with it? Quecerasaha may well travel around the country and it may have been Scott that has not seen anymore games then him this season. But even if he hasn't what does that matter, he could show his support in other ways, financially for example.

Plus as he demonstrates he has supported the team for 30 plus years, thats proper support through thick and thin relegateion and all, it's a lot more than the five year stint that some of us (I include myself) are on. I bet in that time he's seen relegation and financial worries etc etc. Sometimes when watching the Fleet I think god this lot are shit but this is the best it's ever been. If Scott remains the full 30 plus years, like I'm sure Kenny has, then he deserves all our respect.

As for the drum... 30 people stood near a drum doesn't sound like hundreds of people stood near a drum it just sounds like 30 people stood near a drum. It's there to help create excitment when as I said recently the day I need help getting excited is the day I stop going. It sounded a lot better on staurday with out it.

To make it clear, I am not saying that Q. is not a loyal supporter. I'm just pointing out that the drummer shows his support with the drum by watching every game.
There are ways in which people show their loyal support for the club, whether it would be would be singing along with the drum or financially supporting the club.
Sorry about the mix up!

The management have stated and always will that this does help the players though!!?? FACT

Hence why in every home match programme both Liam and Alan ask us to make lots of noise as always, or something along those lines

Hence the Exeter City game, we were 2-0 down at half time, then the second half, the Fleet were shooting towards the Plough End, and then we scored two goals, nearly a third, and the players believe it was because of the noise made by everyone in the new stand - it motivated the team to a good and well deserved result.

i would imagine it had more to do with a halftime team talk and then when the first goal went in, a sense of impending doom on exeters part and the fleet thinking they could make a comeback of liverpool proportions

Calm down, we're all entitled to an opinion.

Half of us believe this is partially the reason why the Fleet came out confident in the second half.

The players love the noise, the management love the noise, hence Alan Kimble stating in the programme every home game: "Make some noise as usual!" I have even had a conversation with Alan Kimble at the Altrincham home match (I think), and he said to me to keep the drum going for a full 90mins (although this I wouldn't do because I would be completely knackered), because it keeps the lads going.

[This is the longest debate I've been in] lol

half and partially are the operative words in this statement kev.

Liam: "go out there play the same, but listen for the drum, if its there, score some goals. but dont let any in"

Team: "YEAH"

i think, not.

Haha I love this forum, I don't think the term 'sit on the fence' exists. Whilst I'm well and truly on Kev's side here, can we not just agree to settle on the middle ground, which is...

-The drum is usually a great generator of a positive atmosphere

-The team can be lifted by this good atmosphere, amongst other things

-The team's attitude and performance can be affected by the atmosphere in the ground

-The drum does NOT guarantee a better performance but it encourages it

-You do not NEED a drum to create an uplifting atmosphere

-However, a drum present HELPS to build the atmpshere up!

I challenge you to pick holes in that! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
