I have to say I'm no great fan of the drum, but if it helps the team, that's fine by me.
That said, at least we don't have hundreds of those bloody rattles that were so popular in the 50's ans 60's!!!
They WERE irritating!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Yeh my dad made one of them rattles at school and used it down at Gravesend & Northfleet when he was a kid. He showed me it, told me to take it to a match, I said "a definate no no!!!" to that.

Firstly, I am definitely NOT a killjoy!

Can we have a poll? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

And what criteria are using here to determine the drum-player being an idiot? Is everyone that does something you don't like automatically labelled an idiot?

Are you talking about all the 'sad individuals' who like the drum to be there, to help urge the team on! If you have a problem with the drum, then it's your problem.

But surely vocal support can be given to the team without the need for a drum, as was commonly done in the past? Indeed, given that we have relatively few people, particularly at away games, joining in with songs compared to, say, Aldershot supporters, the drum can often drown out any words that are being sung. In the absence of a drum today at Westleigh Park, there's a perfect opportunity to give singing sans drum a try.

Also, the above point about cramped accommodation at away games meaning escaping the drum is difficult, if not impossible, is a highly valid one.

I know for a fact that the Gravesend & Northfleet team like the drum being their, inc. Alan Kimble. They like it because they feel it urges them on, it shows the supporters are giving their ultimate support.

This is perhaps true, but it is very rare that the drum urges the team on. If we go down, people don't sing because they're unhappy. I'd argue that the team urges the drum on more than the other way round. If we're 1-0 up, it may urge the team on to get more goals, but at 1 or 2 goals down the crowd is silent. If noise is seen as a way to urge the team on, surely the best time to utilise it is in adversity?

Quecerasaha if we're talking about idiots, what are the criteria for them? You're calling the drummer an idiot. The drummer travels all around the country following GNFC and drumming up a positive atmosphere which the team enjoy playing in. For all of the 90 minutes he encourages and supports the team, with all of the people around the drum. None of that is at all idiotic. What is plain stupid, however, is sad b@stards who only speak up to gloat after the team has done badly, seeming to enjoy the fact that the team's sub-standard performance at times, proves them right after they'd predicted doom and gloom. It's also stupid to suggest that strong supporters of GNFC, who do alot for the team, are idiots, and it is being a sad killjoy to slag off the drum, which creates a positive atmosphere, as opposed to other people presumably like yourself who enjoy slating the players in red shirts on the pitch, which makes the players lose confidence. Rant Over.

Well said Kayne (*applause*). I travel around the country for most of the away matches and attend all home matches, not at any of those times has the drummer or some of us around the drum ever left a match until the final whistle has gone, supporting the team all the way.

Quecerasaha, how many matches have you been to this season? Not as many as the drummer has, I can tell you! Proves the drummer has more than loyal support for the club.

Although I wouldn't fancy standing next to him, he does a great job.
We need a group of people to get the atmosphere going. This passes down to the players.
Even I have been known to sing on occasions.

Leona is safe with her record deal though :-)

Do you stand on the halfway line? (lol)

I can understand why some people don't stand right next to or with the drummer, because it may be a bit loud, but if they like it then that's alright.

Nice one, Jeff.

I've avoided commenting on this until now but can I ask what travelling around the country has to do with it? Quecerasaha may well travel around the country and it may have been Scott that has not seen anymore games then him this season. But even if he hasn't what does that matter, he could show his support in other ways, financially for example.

Plus as he demonstrates he has supported the team for 30 plus years, thats proper support through thick and thin relegateion and all, it's a lot more than the five year stint that some of us (I include myself) are on. I bet in that time he's seen relegation and financial worries etc etc. Sometimes when watching the Fleet I think god this lot are shit but this is the best it's ever been. If Scott remains the full 30 plus years, like I'm sure Kenny has, then he deserves all our respect.

As for the drum... 30 people stood near a drum doesn't sound like hundreds of people stood near a drum it just sounds like 30 people stood near a drum. It's there to help create excitment when as I said recently the day I need help getting excited is the day I stop going. It sounded a lot better on staurday with out it.

You are correct in your definition of a loyal supporter, Harry.

Queserasaha/wvn, like me, has been supporting Fleet since the 1960's. Like me, probably nearing 1000 appearances.

It's not a competition to see who is the best, most loyal or loudest fan, we just like the Fleet and are entitled to grumble when things go wrong.

I believe queserasaha has not made any serious criticisms so far this year, apart from his dislike of the drum.

I cannot believe it, I actually agree with Harry and Chatham Gary, must be something I ate last night.

Support for the club and team comes in many forms, those who can or want to travel do, those who cannot for whatever reason I am certain have ears pricked listening to Chas's every word. I personally do not like the drum so I do not stand near it, simple really.

The lads who travel around with the drum and sing there support great, keep it up.

I am just pleased that as many people as possible support the team,if you can only make home games, fantastic, the club get the real benefit through the cash we all pay.

Lets hope we have bumper crowds this Christmas, and if you really hate the drum, perhaps we could encourage more of our musically talented people to form a band, lets have a competition perhaps a Fleet X factor now that would great, any volunteers for the Simon Cowell part?

I think the issue isn't so much about whose support is better than whose. The issue I had was with Quecerasaha criticising the way that alot of supporters, myself included, choose to support the team. I can understand people taking exception to this argument if I were slating the way Quecerasaha supports the team, but I'm not. I don't like the way he's slating the drummer and co', who choose to constructively build a good atmosphere for the team, and for alot of the fans. Although I criticised Quecerasaha's comments and attitudes shown on this forum, I personally wasn't criticising his support for the team, so maybe he should think twice before he starts questioning and knocking the way in which other supporters choose to get behind the Fleet.
