Well the referee was Mr Rock today. I thought I’d tell you that at the outset because it felt like the Mr Rock show rather than a football match. Within the 1st minute he had awarded a penalty to W + F for them for a nothingy type challenge. W + F shoots the ball against the post – no goal.

 

Kojo was on fire chasing balls and just shooting wide.

 

In the 36th minute a mistake by Ahmet Rifat gifted a beautiful ball to Bryan Hammatt who headed a looping header over the diving Ed Thompson. Town go in front completely against the run of play up until that point.

 

W + F had no choice but to take the game to town in the second half and quickly forced a superb reflex save from JJ to a diving header. Town players were being booked all over the park and most decisions were going W + F way leaving town fans in disbelief. Kojo was unceremoniously brought down in front of the ref, complains with open arm gestures and is booked when the tackler did deserve a booking. Ricci Crace fired a superb shot for Ed Thompson to dive and make a superb stop the rebound fell to Bryan who then also forced a second great save. Bryan Hammatt fired a great shot over. W + F got a corner and a superb flying dive connected with the ball leaving JJ no chance. Paul Campbell tackled back superbly. On 84 minutes Bryan Hammatt was brought down on the edge of the box by the last man Guy Morris – Town win a penalty and the referee sends Ahmet Rifat off? Town fans looked at each other in disbelief. Rudi Hall scored the penalty 2 – 1. Game over.

 

Mr Rock was so officious but inconsistent. I accept officious control providing it is balanced. Rudi Hall went to take a corner and he ran over to place the ball on the line. A few seconds later W + F player takes a throw in and they can walk along the line as much as they like before making the throw - no action.

was an odd ref performance. we didn;t look like wiinign, btu I'll take the points. grind those results out. nice to see deano get a run out, and he made an immediate impact.

Even after going 2-1 up, we had 3 great chances to extend the lead.The only time we didn't look like winning was the precise minute that Wingate equalised.For the other 89 minutes we had the (slight) edge.

I actually agree with the general.

 

For all their speed and fancy footwork they created 2 chances apart from their goal. One was the penalty which they could not finish and the other was the fantastic save by JJ.

 

I though that we were on top after we changed to 4-4-2 and Paul Campbell took the left back role. Kojo was fantastic and deserves his place. Rudi Hall also had a good game and Bryan Hammett deserved his goal and was unlucky with a couple of other chances.

 

The rumours about Lee Smith leaving are difficult to take and I feel that he deserves as long a run out as Matt is getting. Matt will have to look to his laurels with Dave Bastian and Liam Patrick attaining full fitness. The squad looks very strong at the moment. If only the tactics were right and we give up on this 3 at the back as it is obviously not working without Adam Gant.

I understand the referee is being fast tracked to bigger & better things, and was being assessed yesterday. Let's hope he simply didn't have one of his better days yesterday, otherwise we are all in trouble!

My view is that he needs to improve on yesterdays performance to get a chance of refereeing the ESL which means he'll be refereeing the premiership next week I guess!
