Bosman ruling

Would that be a "pre contract Agreement", Rob? Does the Law of Contract apply to "pre-contracts"? How many pages are there in a pre-contract agreement? Do Lawyers charge half their usual fee for negotiating a pre-contract as opposed to a contract?

[Half their usual fee would be three times too much, mind. Cue my good friend mdetaylor...... ]

It would be a contract that comes in to force at some specified date in the future, presumably at the expiry of the previous contract of employment. The Bosman ruling allows any player over the age of 24 who is under contract with one club to discuss terms with any other club and sign a pre-contract agreement in the last six months of their contract. The player is allowed to move for free. In the case of players under 24, compensation is paid in respect of development costs for that player, generally agreed between the clubs or if not decided by tribunal.

Apart from exceptional circumstances, any contract of one year or more will run from 1 July to 30 June. The date for entering into pre-contract negotitations with another club for a player is therefore 1 Jan.
