The clubhouse - farewell from me.

AFF

Recommended Posts

Saturday was the final straw for me.

It wont make any difference to anything but I have finally had enough of the regime in the clubhouse and I wont be attending for as long as it remains in place.

The Supporters Club Committee have made their views perfectly clear to the Board on more than one occasion this season, I gather, and if that can't achieve change then the only thing left for me to do is to take my business elsewhere.

I'm not so foolish as to believe that my action will bring the place to a standstill, of course. The rest of you can do what you like. Enjoy.

Any number of criticisms can be, and have been, levelled at the arrangements in the bar/clubhouse this season Laz, but on Saturday the torrent of foul-mouthed abuse from that surly barman was far beyond any level of acceptability.

On this occasion, the abuse was directed at the lady barman who was serving me at the time. I am, actually, embarrassed to confess that I chose to walk away, in shock rather than fear. Not for the first time in my life, I wish that I could turn the clock back.

It's a shame you feel like that, AFF. You and your family will be missed (not that I frequent the place much at the moment).

I was surprised how few people were in the bar after the game on Saturday.

There were no more than about 20/25. Considering the size of the crowd that's pretty poor. What is going wrong?

I wasn't. Everyone drinks in the Crown now ,don't they? They are, indeed, the most unfriendly and surly 'hosts', I have ever come across in my life. The place is now like a pub version of Fawlty Towers. Be interested to know how much the takings have gone down by.

If they were running a proper pub, it would go bust within a month. They could take a few lessons from ex clubhouse manager, who is now in charge of the Plough.

I don't go in there often enough to comment.

Maybe if John Gibson popped in more frequently he'd see the amount of potential revenue that he is losing.

It used to be good when Ray ran it. It went downhill with Kerry. It started brightly with James and Vicki but they seemed to lose interest once they moved from St Albans and started a family.

Maybe someone should talk to Gibbo.

Yes, we had some great times, but that was when it started to go downhill.

It used to be standing room only under Ray.

I think the place went several years without being cleaned too.

Millenium Night was good though. And how about that night after the Spurs friendly?

I think it's a combination of things:

- the type of lager (not everyone likes Carlsberg).

- problems with the pumps not working/beer running out.

- takes ages to get served.

- grumpy staff.

- No Prem Plus.

I've stopped going in at HT simply because it was taking too long to get served. I don't know if it's because there are not enough people serving, or because one of them always seems to be "changing a barrel". Apparently it was reasonly quiet up there on saturday, so I missed out. At the Herts Senior Cup game game a couple of weeks ago it tooks about 10 mins to get served at HT, and there were only just over 100 people altogther at the actual game!! Something had stopped working, which seems to happen quite a lot!

At about 6.30 on Saturday the method to get rid of us was to open the doors so it got cold in the room - we'd just bought our final drinks. We just got up and shut the door, but that is a pretty dick-ish think to do. All they need to say is we're shutting at X,and we'll go - no need to be w@nkish about it!!

I wouldn't have thought that shutting the door was a particularly dick-ish thing to do, Zagreus.

The flashing of the lights on and off strikes me as a somewhat blunt method of letting the patrons know that it's time to go. Mind you, with that guy, he would probably struggle to say "Time Gentlemen, please" without at least one f-word.

I think it's such a shame - Saturday in the clubhouse after the game used to be one of the best times of the week (maybe I need to get out more!) I know we can vote with our feet and not go but can we really recreate the unique qualities of the clubhouse? enjoying the post match atmosphere, the thrill of the scratchcard and going home with sticky sleeves from the table.....

Sad to hear the Clubhouse atmos is not what it once was. I have fond memories of the party after we beat Boston in the Trophy and the Millenium Eve do.

I do, however, disagree with the criticism aimed at Kerry - I thought she did an excellent job.

Nice to hear that Ray finally got to run the Plough.
