Liam Daish.

Credit has to go to Liam Daish today, his tactics were brilliant.

I'm sure Oxford thought we were going to play 4-4-2 so when we came out with 3-5-2 even I was suprised!

Defensively we were outstanding: We look a much better side with Paul McCarthy in defence.

We out-muscled them in midfield, even without Quinn. Stacy Long looks the real deal in midfield based on todays performance. The whole team were passing brilliantly, except a couple of passes.

Sodje and Charlie Mac up front were brilliant as well. Their tireless running really made the Oxford defence nervous and ruffled them up as well.

So all in all we were BRILLIANT!!!!

Shame Lance has been cut from the England squad though. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Their number 2 (Anaclet) deserved to be sent off for his foul on Stacy Long. He was booked an then decided to try and slide in on Sacha Opinel in the box (not the wisest desicion ever <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />), and caught Sacha. But fair play to Opinel who stayed on his feet and had the ball cleared off the line!

I hope this performance will entice all the people that turned up because of the 'big team' to realise that the fleet can play well as well!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Superb performance from everyone.

Thought McCarthy, Ricketts and Ross stood out for me but everbody worked soo hard - t'was great!!

But - How can we do that today and lose to Stafford 4-1 and play awful on another day!? No offence intended.

If we can play like that more often we will only ever be near the top end of this league!

why is that?

Fairclough informed him by fax he didn't make the final cut. Fairclough doesn't actually watch many non-league matches.

Superb performance today, thought Long and Ricketts were excellent in midfield, but no-one put a foot wrong.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was the few miserable old gits posting who's weekend has obviously been ruined by the victory today and were again calling for Daish's head ( among other parts !!)

But no !!....praise where praise is due......I thought we played very well against a very good side today and deserved a 1-0, especially after the close scrapes in the Oxford goalmouth in the first half.

Well done to all....

Cheers,

A big thank you to Liam and the boys, what a great days entertainment.

I had Stacy Long down as man of the match but would find it hard to argue against anyone who had Sodge, Ross, Macca, Ricketts or Slatts.

Well done to everyone and more of the same next week please. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

Given that Long was a long way from goal and running towards the left wing, and that Anaclet wasn't the last defender, the referee got it spot on, I'm afraid.

Lots of sensible man of the match suggestions above in what was a fine team performance. Ricketts was my personal pick - playing him in the holding midfield role worked like a dream, in particular his willingness to put his foot on the ball and relieve the pressure with accurate passes rather than aimless long balls.

Not sure "the last man" issue should have come into it - it was such a horrid challenge - late & scything (just about caught on the ideo clips from Graham S) that it deserved red anyway - sometimes I think the ref is too busy thinking "last man?" to punish a tackle for what it was.

Also, as soon as he realised Stacy Long was past him he stuck his foot up (Well, higher then it was already!)!

Gilchrist deserved to go in that incident though. Having already seen yellow for a high challenge on Long, he then got involved and pushed Long to the ground after he was fouled by Anacelt, then went on a rampage remonstrating and pushing whoever got in his way. Ref was more intent on booking Anaclet and didn't see Gilchrist throwing his toys.

I never thought I'd say this, but GNFC are having the same season as Arsenal.

Strolling to victory against the top sides in the division, and then being embarrassed by teams we should be beating comfortably. Imagine where we'd be now if we could put away teams such as Stafford, Cambridge and, of course, Chelmsford!

It is nice to read that no one has a serious issue with the man of the match award ( unlike criticism the last time I was involved in this ). For anyone who might be interested in the democratic way in which this was decided, Onome gained 7 out of the 10 votes cast. In fact virtually all of the team would have been worthy winners in what was an all round excellent team effort.

I made the trip back to Gravesend for this game, and it was fine performance by the Fleet. They were up for the game from the start and we should have been a couple of goals in front at half time. I was concerned that our failure to score in the first half might come back to haunt us, but we kept battling and got what we deserved in the end. Sodje and MacDonald seem to be developing a partnership, the defence looked solid, and Long had a good game in midfield. I think all the players and the management deserve praise. And I will get back when I can, certainly much more enjoyable than watching Charlton at the present time!!!!! However, I think the test for Gravesend is to see how they play next week at Northwich, same intensity is needed to get a good result to keep the momentum going. :-)

Daish unimpressed

It's not hard to see why they've gone with Jalal and Lee-Barrett, but it is fair to say that the system of trimming an initial squad, rather than just announcing a 16-man squad to start with, is a little silly.
