1976 and all that...

Rick the Dick

Recommended Posts

Extra time at Wembley in the Vase final against Stamford. Geoff Aslett scores the winner, but who "made it" for him (his words, not mine!).

An old friend I met up with this afternoon.

Anyone remember or any guesses?

I was there but have no recollection of the game at all (which is odd, as I was probably too young to be drunk!).

Nope. Not Paul Scott either.

I'll have to start thinking of some clues.

"The goal was superbly executed. The ever-probing Gary Smith carried his aching legs down the right and his through ball evaded Stamford's Andy Crawford and Malcolm Hird. It then found Aslett, moving just inside the penalty area, and he took his time before beating Kevin Johnson with a crisp, right foot shot"

As reported by the Evening Echo.

Don't think Ricky played in 1976. Didn't Geoff have an Aston Martin with the no. plate..GEOFF 1?

Missed the next year, but went back in '79 to see the best hat-trick ever scored at Wembley.

Dougie Young's lob from 30 yards or so was sublime..Is there any video/dvd evidence of that final around please?

Been an associate of Dougie's for years, but not seen him for a while. So sad to see what happened to him.

Saw Freddie Clayden at Billericay a few years ago and he was looking good still. Quality team in the mid to late 70s and I knew a lot of the team as I was involved in the Brentwood Sunday League with Roblin Sports and Nissen, who most of the Billericay side played for on Sundays...

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay.

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

Why are we reciting Wordsworth????

Roblin Sports , I remember playing against them for Park Avenue over Melbourne Park , some top Sunday sides back then & some of the crowds that would put some of the Ryman teams to shame nowadays.

Dave Roblin had the money to bring in some top quality Saturday players...plus Peter Taylor as manager. Spawned Trever Putney too. I was mainly involved with the seconds in the Brentwood Sunday League, but also a top side.

I used to manage a team called Albemarle in said league back in 76 and we played Roblin in the Argus cup quarter final. Was mid week coz of the drought and they put the first team out...only lost 5-0, but a side packed full of Basildon and Billericay stars...

Mick Loughton..remember him too. Played for Brentwood and the Chelmsford after the 'merger' cough!

That's the man! Gary Smith. Although I'm not so sure he'd agree with the "it found Aslett" comment. More like an inch perfect cross he told me!

Still doing well & living & working in Essex. Was still around for the next Vase final but didn't play due to injury. Ended up back at Stock Utd in the Mid-Essex league after Billericay.

Ryan gets the prize <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
