Your opinions.....

Good point but Newell has always been someone who calls it as he sees it and speaks his mind which upsets people in high places who don't like the truth when confronted by it, it's a human nature type thing and cost Brian Clough the England job ultimately costing us at least two World Cups.

How did not appointing Brian Clough cost England 2 World Cups..thats conjecture on your part Rhodes.

Lato - Well isn't that obvious, I think 99.9% of people of that 70s/80s generation would fully agree with me.

No its's an opinion...you have absolutely nothing to back it up with. Yes Clough was a great manager between 1970 and 1990ish and he probabaly should have been given England manager. However you cannot definitely say if he had been in charge that England would have won the World Cup.

Lato - There are one or two people living in the vicinity of the City Ground in Nottingham who would disagree with you on this one and side with me.

Lato - I do read your posts, if you are referring to having nothing to back my statement up with I thought I just had, ie two European Cups with players like Kenny Burns, Frank Clark, Larry Lloyd, John McGovern and Garry Birtles, what do you think he would have done with the Nations best at his disposal.

Conjecture Rhodes...it didn't happen so you don't know. Therefore you cannot say he DEFINITELY would have won 2 World Cups.

Anyway he was interviewed in 1977 when qualification for the WC of 1978 was near enough gone and depended on Italy not beating Luxembourg at home (check the records if you don't believe me). So that would mean the 2 WC's that in your opinion he definitely would win are 1982 and 1986 which means he would have been in the job for 9 years - a long time in international management. And I think Clough would have gone mad with the lack of involvement on a day to day basis with players over that length of time.

Lato - A good post and I remember qualification for Argentina as if it were yesterday but your argument is still flawed in that Clough was also an old fashioned Englishman who's blood was red white and blue, he would have taken a pride in the job like no other Manager, other than Sir Alf, before him, and, in my opinion we would have walked the 1982 and 1986 World Cups with our eyed closed, those were the two I was originally referring to.

Like I said thats your opinion...you can't say it categorically would have happened though. Admittedly England would probably have had a better performance under Clough in 82 than Greenwood although having struggled to qualify they did well in the finals reamining undefeated if albeit somewhat boringly.

Rhodes - we were unbeaten in the '82 World Cup. What would Clough have done to improve upon that? And what could Clough have done to stop Maradona handling the ball in '86?

Potters Bar Town - I still have the empty box of match sticks from 1982 as a souvenier and it is one of those extra large boxes. The game with Spain where Brooking and Keegan both entered the fray on the hour mark still gives me nightmares and Clough would have ensured we got through the group and gone on to win it. As for 1986 someone would have clattered Maradonna on his run for the second goal and Terry Fenwick would never have got a sniff of an England shirt let alone been allowed to wear one.

Folks - I have been meaning to tie up the loose ends on this thread for completeness as the following piece appeared in the press last week:
'Luton Manager Mike Newell has been fined £6,500 by the FA after comments about female official Amy Rayner after his side's 3-2 defeat by QPR in November. After being charged with improper conduct, which he denied, Newell had requested a personal hearing. However he was fined £5000 for 'his comments' and £1500 for 'failing to act in the best interests of the game' in that his comments were made about the role of Women officials in football generally'.
I believe that the Kenilworth Road faithful should have a whip round at a future game to collect £6,500 in buckets and give it to Mike Newell so he his not out of pocket although I'm sure Luton Football Club sent the cheque to the FA without even telling him or mentioning the matter again, AWK may know more and may wish to make the final comment on this thread.

Well, as someone with no tact, diplomacy or political savvy, you would think that! He came across as a chauvanistic dinasaur and deserved what he got!

As much as I like Mike Newell he has only himself to blame for the comments and understandably the FA took offence to it. Too many times he looks for blame in others and most fans would prefer he kept his mouth shut now and concentrated in turning things around on the pitch instead.

Besides as he is on a reported 450,000 pounds per year I'm sure he can offord to pay it himself!

AWK - I have to say that I beg to differ, one of the charges against Newell was that his comments were made about the role of Women officials in football generally which I'm sure wasn't the case, he has been hung out to dry in my opinion and Luton should do the decent thing and pay the £6,500 for him even if he is on 450k a year at Kenilworth Road.

Did you actually hear what he said?
